Trouble with DVD Ripper

I'm using EasyDVD to convert my OC DVDs into MPEGs for fan vidding use and cannot seem to get away from that squashed look to the final video. Once it's converted and ready for playback it just looks too distorted.

Is there a setting that I should have it set on when doing Widescreen converts? I've not ran into this problem before when converting my Veronica Mars DVDs and they were widescreen and came out looking just fine.

Thanks alot and I'm a newbie so dumb it down for me if you can.

do you have a link to this software?
Have considered converting them rather to a DivX format rather than mpeg?

As dvds and mpeg2 are pretty much the same thing in that they are in the compatible dvd movie format
