can anyone help? i need to know what software i can use to convert svcd to vcd, my dvd player will play everything apart from svcd (damn thomson people!) pleeeease help.

You can use TMPG to render your MPEG2 SVCD's to MPEG1 VCD format. Download the latest free shareware version 2.510 from tmpgenc.net. Unzip the file to a folder but don't create any desktop shortcuts for this folder. You must open it from your source folder or it won't operate properly. You can select your NTSC or PAL VCD format from the start up wizard and follow the steps to render your SVCD TO VCD format. It may seem a little complicated at first but with the help menu it is quite easy to use and offers excellent rendering and clean of video files. There are options to trim out 'noise' from the outside edges of your video, as well as audio volume level adjustments and high quality rendering to clean up grainy source files. If you have any questions let me know as explaining these options is a little time consuming.

managed to download the tmpgenc software, but when i try to open the svcd file off the scvd, it says that the file is not supported (.dat) what software do i need to use to convert this dat file into a avi that i can encode into a vcd?

I have to be up in a few hours so I'll be quick. It would help to know what program created your SVCD. TMPG will read any standard MPEG2 formatted file. You might want to try simply copying the file in Virtual DUB. I've had a few files that TMPG wouldn't read and Virtual DUB would. By re encoding it set the audio and video tracks and was able then to be read by TMPG. Virtual DUB will also render MPEG1 and 2 but I believe their MPEG codex pack is not the standard version and is not supported by all players. I could be wrong about this. Seem to remember having problems in the past. I've always used TMPG to render in MPEG and Virtual DUB for DivX. Good luck and keep me posted. More free time tomorrow.

Use VCDGear to extract the movie from the cd (it will make an mpeg file whitch TMPGEnc will accept) then encode to VCD with TMPGEnc.
