Is it going to be dvd-r/ dvd-rw OR is it going to be dvd+r/ dvd+rw or is the smartest thing to get a sony DRU 500AX that will do BOTH formats??? I heard that microsoft and others were backing dvd +r and dvd+rw formats, but who knows who will win???

At this time MS says they are going to support +r/+rw in their next version of WINDOWS. But the -r/-rw drives have been out longer and there are more of them, so they are winning so far. I doubt there will be a clear cut winner. Most set top players support the -r disks for playback if they support any. And so far -r disks are still cheaper than +r disks at many of the retail stores, but that should change as more +r/+rw drives show up. If you can afford a dual format burner such as the SONY DRU-500, you can go both ways as needed.

You can't go wrong with the Sony! I have a DRU 500AX and love it! I think it'll be a while until the standard is set since it's Apple vs Microsoft.

I have 4 DVD players in my house. The oldest is 3 years old (Sony DVP-S360)and the newest is 6 months old (Pioneer DV-45A). The Sony won't play CD-R but it plays DVD+R, go figure. They all play DVD+Rs that I have recorded off my Sony DRU-500A. I even have a Portable Panasonic that plays the DVD+Rs. I recommend the +R.

I believe strongly that markets have been shaped already in order for -R to win the game. One of the best examples of this was the Sony's -- one of the official founders of DVD+RW Alliance -- decision to support minus format as well.

And plain blank media sales figures indicate something: predicted sales of -R/RW 200M for year 2003, predicted sales of +R/RW 30M for year 2003.
