I am currently backing up with Nero 7, DVDShrink and DVDDecryptor on to Datawrite with a yellow cover(-R), I had been using Ridisc(-R).
They play perfectly in my xbox but when I try to play them in my mates DVD player they aren't recognised, even though he has usually no problem playing backups in his machine.
What am I doing wrong?

seems your using low grade/low quality discs.

Pick up some media that's listed in the first class category. The top one in second class is safe as well.
Try that and it should cure your issue.

The media should be ok, if you check

it gets a very favourable review. I tested the copy on my own dvd player (Matsui 110)and absolutly no problems, and as I said they play fine on my xbox, I checked to see if her dvd player was the problem but pparently it is good for playing DVD-R's.

Thanks for getting back to me. I didn't realise that that was out of date sorry, however I checked the link you gave me and I followed a recommended retailer link and they recommended the disks I was using, I checked with DvdInfoPro to make sure they had the same code

Anyway a couple of questions, why do you say 'if you are sticking with -R'? I backup copies of my games (xbox & PS2) and movies and was under the impression that -R was the best for this, also I checked the link you had for the different types of media, but don't see Verbatim Data Life mentioned, does it come under different name? It is,unless you have a quality burner with the bitsetting capability of booktyping the plus format into dvd-rom. That booktyping will definitely be more compatable on more stand alones and pc drives. Not all burners support this feature.
What are the brand names and model#s of yours and your friends DVD-RW drives?
Lots of variations between burners.This means your friends dash backups works,but your dash-same media- doesn't.Your burner is different,and that stand alone is telling you that with the no disc inserted error.You may have to use the plus format,keep in mind quality media also helps out.If your burner is capable of booktyping,that would be the best route to go so you'll need the plus format to do this.
Let us know those model #s,they will reveal which format may be best suited for that stand alone player,coming from your burner.
The newer verbatims are now being called data life. They use to have media life/data life/data life plus/and still have digital movie quality. Now with all the confusion of those names,they are sticking with data life. The older data life 4x were made by mitsubishi/ricohjpn/and cmags.That's why the data life plus was highly sought afterand not the older data life.The data life plus were mitsubishi media,and of higher quality.

Verbatim Data Life (-R) to my knowledge are made exclusively by Mitsubishi Chemical Corp which is there in 1st class section of the site I referenced. I do believe that other Verbatim discs use a range of manufacturers.
As far as +R vs -R, you'll always get mixed opinions. The growing trend is booktyping DVD+R discs to DVD-Rom for better compatibility in DVD players. But booktyping is not supported by all drives. DVD Decrypter can change the bookype for the burn on drives that support it. To check, open Decrypter>click tools>drive>change book type. It lists the drives it supports.

Ok, My DVDRW is an Empirex and the info on it is as follows;
DVDRW IDE1008
Firmware 0060
Buffer Size 2048KB
Connection Interface Atapi / IDE
Drive Interface ATAPI-3
(info from DVDInfoPro)
Aspi info is;
ASPI32.SYS 4.71.2
WOWPOST.EXE 4.6 (1021)
WINASPI.DLL 4.6 (1021)
WNASPI32.DLL 4.71.2
Nero gives me the option to booktype DVD-ROM, when I use Nero to copy I always booktype DVD-ROM, I suppose that doesn't make a difference with the -Rs?
DvdDecryptor does not appear to support booktype for my burner.
My mate's brother does the backups on his laptop but is away at the moment and she can't get in contacrt with him.

Firmware is up to date. Yes, you can only booktype +R's not -R's
In decrypter you should see this:
and then this
and then select your drive tab, then the current media type setting and then the new setting change type to, and then click change.
