I only occasionally rip an audio track from a DVD movie so I am no expert. I use the ImToo DVD Audio Ripper and it's up to date. Seems to work fine. However, I got a new pair of Bose headphones that are really nice, so I recently tried them out by listening to(and watching) a favorite move. The sound was great. Immediately after the movie, I listed to some of the tracks I had ripped, and the sound was quite good, but not as good as listening to the movie disc itself. I tried listening to both ripped wav and mp3 files (128kb) and I didn't notice much difference there (perhaps my ears are too old.) I also listened to the movie disc without watching the picture and it still seemed to sound a little better (gotta control for that psychological stuff.)

I wondered: am I imaging a difference or might it be real. If it is real, why? Are the audio players different? I use WinDVD 7 for the movie, and Winamp Pro for the ripped audio file.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

I like to rip audio tracks from DVD's too. One of the things I've noticed is that often times the audio volume of the ripped track is lower than what it sounded like when I was watching the movie.

I think this due to DVD audio requiring such a wide range of volume, from quiet dialogue to a loud explosion, so that a mid-range volume for a song might end up with a lower volume than what you'd normally expect if you compared it to the volume of another .mp3 or an audio CD.

Whenever I rip an audio track, after converting it to .mp3, I always check the dB level of the track and normalize the volume to 89 dB. Your audio ripping software may let you specify the dB while ripping. If not, you can use a utility like mp3gain to adjust the volume of an .mp3 file.

If the volume of your ripped audio track isn't the cause of the problem try using Besweet to convert the .AC3 audio to .mp3. It's a very good audio transcoder.

Thanks for the info. I downloaded the BeSweet software and its GUI interface. Seems pretty sophisticated, but I'm hopeful I can figure it out and doubly hopeful there is user info in Afterdawn. You suggested I use BeSweet to convert the .AC3 audio files to .mp3 files. However, how do I get .AC3 files from my DVD disc which has only .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files.

I have the ImToo DVD audio ripper, but the only choices I have for output are .mp3 and .wav.

Thanks

I don't know anything about the ImToo DVD audio ripper, it may be decent but I just don't know. But try running some of the .mp3 files it creates through mp3gain (which is very easy to use) and bring the volume up. If that improves the sound that may be all you need.

You extract the .AC3 audio from your .VOB file by demuxing the .VOB file into it's separate video and audio streams. Everyone has their favorite demuxing tool. You could use VOBEdit or TMPGEnc Plus to Demux out the audio and video.
