been lurking for quite a while... mainly cause google puts your site as the answer to my questions :) but anyway:
been burning games, relatively new to this, but im a sharp fella, in my opinion. i'm having problems writing to "good" media
i started on some khypermedia dvd+r 4x(cmc mag-f01), and i made %10 coasters, so i started looking around, and figured i'd get some brand name media, picked up some memorex 16x dvd+r (cmc mag e01)... oops, %100 coasters. apparently that was common knowledge. so i got some verbatim 16X dvd+r (mcc 004) and nothing works.
the burner is a 4x HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N and i'm using swap magic 3.6 and a slide card. nero to burn it or alcohol 120
i try 2.4 or 4 on the "good" disks and %100 percent of the time i get "this is not a ps2 disk"
the whole reason i switched from the cheap media was because peeps are talking about it ruining ps lasers over time. i dont know how, but if its on the internet it must be true.
so should i just use the cheap media, or try good, slow media?
is it common to have a disk too fast for the burner?
could the drivers on my burner be upgraded? i have seen some firmware increase the speed of a burner... i tried getting the latest firmware from hp, but they dont think this dvd drive ever came in this computer, i dunno, it was factory refurb.
Yes, the laser has a harder time reading the cheaper
DVD's due to the cheap ink they use. Over time it wear out
your laser quicker than if you used a good quality brand.

You can search the net for your burner's firmware, you do not have to get it from HP. That is a very odd model number or i would do a little search for you. OK so i did find it.

update it.
Also if 4X is the fastest it can burn then i would get 4X
DVD-R and set DVD Decrypter to 1X.
It sounds very outdated if 4X is max speed.
Try RiDisc 8x disc, or Taiyo Yudan (dunno how to spell) . Personally i use Ridisc TUFFDISC 8x dvd+rs, BTW can i just ask before you buy anything else. What ps2 model do you have. I have the slimline which is good because it can read dvd+rs. Fat ps2s have hard time reading "DVD+R" . It will be a big problem if you have a only dvd+rw writer like i do, but luckily my ps2 can read +R's. Anyway. if your burner can only burn dvd+r's than you still have a possiblity.
Change Your DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD+R DL Media to DVD-ROM
1) This tutorial assumes that you have a working ISO to burn
2) Put in a Blank DVD+R or DVD+RW Disk into your DVD Burner
3) Open up the DVD Decrypter
4) Select your dvd burner
5) Click on Mode > ISO > Write To see your current settings
6) Right click on the destination box which has your burner selected then highlight and select "Change Book Type":
7)Then select your respected burner's name which are on the tabs:
8) The Change For is basically what media you want to change to DVD-ROM, (i.e For DVD+R Media, For DVD+RW Media)
9) Now for New Setting: which you should select "DVD-ROM":
10) Click on the "Change" button, which will then show a Success pop up window
11) Click on "OK" to close the "Change Book Type" window
12)Start burning! By Clicking the write button (Picture of Hard drive to DVD)
13) Now whenever you use Decrypter to burn DVD+R Media, it will automatically change the BookType or BitSet it to DVD-ROM
