hi everyone, ive been told that this is the best forum for ps2 issues and that i would be able to get my problem fixed here. hopefully :)

I have a UK PS2 (not sure what version, dont think thats gonna matter tbh) and i have the Matrix Infinity Mod chip with version 1.5 of the firmware.

recently the ps2 has stop playing backup and original dvds but will still play cds so i assumed that it was the way that i had burnt them so i tried several different methods (DVD Decrypter, Daemons Tools with CDRWin, Daemon Tools with Alcohol, Alcohol on its own) but still nothing worked.

unfortunetly it has gotten worse since the ps2 no longer plays original DVDs either, its just boots up to the browser\system info screen then when i goto browser it says disc read error.

ive made sure theres no dust clogging anything but still nothing. i cant understand why it would play CDs and not DVDs (backup or original) since if the laser was busted it wouldnt play the cds.

i found a guide to laser calibration that looks horrible to do but im not sure that it would even help since the laser works with cds.

ive tried a few different bootup options in the firmware menu but still nothing.

my only thinking is that its a hardware issue whether its the DVDRom, the laser or something else im not sure. when it trys to play dvds it sounds really loud as if its grinding and having trouble reading the dvd.

i also seen something about the dvdrom alignment, that got anything to do with it?

has anyone had this problem? anyone got any ideas?

I have the same problem.. From what I've been told my Laser is bad and will no longer play DVD discs... only solution is to get it fixed or do what I did (I had the materials to do it so it was no $ loss really) Put a Hard Drive in your PS2 with a Memory Card Exploit and boot games with HD Loader from the Hard Drive and Memory Card Exploit

ive got a spare harddrive sitting here but what else to i need to get? where can i get it from? tbh i dont want to spend any money (or alot of money) since im gonna get my Xbox in the next couple of weeks.

does anyone know of a way to fix the laser? or to fix the problem if its not the laser?

Well you'll also need a Memory Card and PS2 Network Adaptor (to hook the HD too)

All the Software you'll need once you have these things you can find here

I have the same problem! I also have a Matrix Infinity mod with 1.5 Firmware installed.. I watched a DivX movie from a DVD using PS2 Media player 1.50 beta,.. and after that i played a DVD game very shortly.. then turned off the PS2, went to bed, and the next day.. It couldnt boot DVD games/movies! but CD games are fine.. The laser is 3 months old! I just replaced it 3 months ago! ..

I would really appriciate if anyone could tell me what the problem is.. I have a V3 PAL PS2 with a 400C laser installed. I have to be VERY sure that it is the laser before i buy a new one! ...

well i'd suggest the following:

do the 'disc error' fix(dont know if it applies to slim ps2)
adjust the pots of the laser

im guessing the laser just dont have enough strength to read.
