I want to buy some speakers to hook up to my Yamaha amp. Ive looked on ebay and ive seen DJ speakers which seem to be quite strong and rather cheap. good idea or not?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SKYTEC-15-400w-PA-DISCO-SPEAKERS_W0QQitemZ5...

theres one auction I was looking at.

any suggestions would be great.

well, it goes like this.... you get what you pay for from e-bay.
i would not suggest you buy used (even new) from them.
lets start with some basics first.

whats the model of your AVR?
how many channels, watts per channel?
what will you listen to more, music or movies?
what are your room dimensions?

for some budget priced speakers, try this site, cheap for a whole set minus your sub..
http://www.fluance.com/fluan5speaks.html

not too bad for 300 bucks (us dollars)
check the rest of them too, i have researched these, and from what i read, in that price range, they are very good, and if you dont like them, at least thousands of dollars was not wasted.

-ive got a Yamaha RX-V440RDS
-i can get upto 6.1 but only want the main speakers (front L+R) to be DJ ones
-i do believe its 100 watts per channel
-i'd listen to more music than films overall
-my room is roughly 2.5m x 3m

the rule is, if it sounds good in stereo, it will be very good for home theater.
is there any places that you can demo speakers?

I have Polk Audio surround with powered sub hooked to my Yamaha, awesome. I listened to a lot and for me, they were the best sounding.

my current situation has changed which means I got sum more money to spend on my surround sound kit :D

considering this I went looking on the net and I found sum nice speakers by Mission and a very nice looking sub by Yamaha which comes to a total of £609.80. thats for replacing all of my speakers.

here are the links for the speakers:

Front L+R and Surround L+R - http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo-2.cfm/Product_ID/2083
Centre - http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo-2.cfm/Product_ID/2081
Subwoofer - http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo-2.cfm/Product_ID/2318

I read that its best to have the same brand of speakers for the best results, I chose the yamaha sub purely for the look of it and i hope it wont effect the overall performance

you are correct in matching speakers........ yes.

but not to rain on your party, but the DB range on them speakers are horrible. and the sub is what it is......... subPAR
me personally, i would keep looking.
yamaha makes nice things...... subs is not one of them.
look into a klipsch, velodyne, mirage, or even a polk sub.

i dunno, makes it hard for you to get what you really want. i am in the states, so that makes it even harder for you.
tell you what, find some speakers, post links if you can, and i'll take a peek at them and give you my opinion. cuz what i can find here, you may not have there and vice versa..

im not lookin for a state of the art system, i like my sound but im not fussy in that direction. Most speakers I have found are on similar levels of the ones I posted earlier on. As long as I get good bass (i currently have a 30 watt sub which is adequate) and good sound in general I will be happy.
Im thinkin of visiting one of the stores and taking a CD for me to test the speakers myself
