Greetings.

I am trying to convert to NTSC several PAL DVDs I own, as I don't have room for another, PAL-compatible DVD-player. I tried both Avi2DVD and VSO DivX to DVD (freeware version.) I used both DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter (IFO mode) to copy the DVD contents to a hard disk. Copied VOBs play fine using Ulead's and ATI software players.

Here's the problem I have: when I open the ripped VOBs in either Avi2DVD or DivXtoDVD for NTSC conversion, these tools do not recognize the correct PAL video stream resolution of 720x576; instead, they see it as 352x576, i.e., squished by about 2 in the horizontally. I believe this only happens with input that has the 16:9 aspect ratio according to IFOEdit; 4:3 works fine.

When I open the IFO files in IFOedit, it shows the correct 720x576 resolution for all segments/chapters.

The DVDs are not encrypted and are region-free, to the best of my knowledge.

Other than this horizontal squishing problem, the conversion to NTSC completes correctly. But of course the "squished" results are not useful.

I am at a loss here, though I *suspect* this has something to do with interlacing. With Avi2DVD, the "interlacing" checkbox was disabled, though.

Help is much appreciated.
