Sorry for the dumb question and there are likely more to follow as I am just considering buying my first video capture card (project VHS 2 DVD). I am considering the Hauppauge 150 as recommended here. Unfortunately they seem to offer several versions and I have yet to really understand the differences. I think I want the WinTV PVR-150 MCE (1042) since I like the RCA jacks etc. but I am just running Win XPhome not media center(web site says XP MCE is required). Is that a problem? The WinTV PVR-150 (1045) says it supports XP but it only includes the RCA Video and what I assume is a stereo line in. I would like to go from my VCR to my PC with as few adapters inbetween as possible. Also the 1042(MCE) includes drivers but no software? while the 1045 includes more software including Ulead etc. I have yet to tackle what S/W to use.

Bottomline is will I be ok buying the 1042 even if I don't have XP MCE? Any help suggestions and or recommendations are appreciated. Thanks, Joe

The MCE versions only have MCE drivers included, and no remote control.
They work in "regular" XP with no problems though.
Get the 150 drivers at www.shspvr.com
Don't try and install it with the driver CD that comes with the MCE version.
There is plenty of 3rd party software that will work with the mpg's, you don't need Ulead.
You can download and install the Hauppauge software free from their support site, although it's basic, and doesn't work all that well, especially the scheduler, but as you want this more for VHS transfer, that's not an issue.

Jim, Thanks so much for your quick response. So to clarify I should buy the 1042 which is the one I like, not load the drivers that come with the card but download the 1045 drivers from shsdvr or Hauppauge? Then as far as software goes I'll just get some of the stuff you have recommended for others on this site. Thanks again It sure helps to be able to talk to someone when you are entering unknown waters. Joe

Yes, grab the 1042 if you don't want the remote.
Download the regular 150 drivers from hauppauge (I prefer SHS's drivers), and then install the card.
