I have a slim ps2 which doesnt work (v12)

It powers on. Lid flips open when I press the button. I place retail game in and close the lid. I dont hear anything spinning and the screen says 'loading disc'. After a few seconds, I get a screen message 'disc not found' or something of that nature.

My question is, Is the ps2 supposed to spin while trying to load?
What could be the problem.... the laser or the spinner or what?

yes it would spin. You should put the disc in then turn it on
by pressing the reset button when the disc is in and the lid is closed. If the laser were bad it would still spin and try to read it.

heres an update.
I cleaned the lens and now the disc spins normal. The game even booted up. I tried 3 different games and they all booted up.
Slowly
All the games eventually froze while 'loading'. None reached actual gameplay. One (Juiced) got as far as track selection.
The Slim PS2 is at my job site and I wont get to it again until Monday. I will try to clean it again then.

What exactly did You use to clean the laser?

I have racked up over 350 hours playing pokemon red. 200 hours on gold. and over 100 on ruby. That's right I'm proud of that

Don't buy SONY they are a bunch of SCAM ARTISTS! I bought the original PS2 and it gave me a "disc read error" so I fixed it but that was only temporary. After that I figured that I would just solve the problem and buy the new Slim PS2. WRONG AGAIN. Just this morning I turned it on and it gave me "the disc could not be read" So I called Sony Consumer Services. They said that my warranty is over and that I would have to pay full price to get it fixed (over $100) plus shipping. I told them that I got it for christmas last year but they said that the warranty is still up (by 6 days). I've spent countless dollars on Sony software and hardware and they are telling me that my warranty is no longer valid because of 6 days. As of now I would NEVER recommend Sony to Anyone. Their customer service is very unprofessional and their products die once past their warranty(how convenient for them). Sony is now officially on my black list. I will definately be looking into an XBOX or Nintendo very soon.

Hope Sony doesn't screw you too... :)

its been a while since my last post. I just forgot to update. I cleaned the lens several times and it has worked ok since then.

I owned 3 with no problem apart from the lens cleaning. Some others I have helped fix were for tray and lens issues. All of which were result from carelessness of the user and not from manufacturers defects. But that is just my experience with Sony. Others may not have been so lucky.
just take great care of your PS2, use the right media to backup your games and your Sony should last for years. Some googling will also help on how to maintain and repair your PS2 once the warrranty is expired. AD itself is useful as it has helped me on many occasions.
Good luck with whatever system you decide to own. I will stick with Sony for now.
