when i convert avi/divx to dvd format using the program VSO DivxtoDVD, then re-authoring with dvd-shrink, and then burning with dvd decrypter but when i play the dvd in stand-alone or in the computer parts of the right and left side are cut off and i want to know if theres a better program or if there is a way that i can fix this. Help is appreciated.

It sounds like you are converting a wide screen AVI file to DVD compliant MPG-2. I don't know VSO software, but check to see if there is an option to keep the aspect ratio. Widescreen movies are typically 16/9, or 1.77:1 aspect ratio. Most TV's are 4/3, or 1.33:1 aspect ratio. If you have a widescreen source, and the resulting DVD movie file does not have black bars along the top and bottom, then you most likely lost the left and right edges of the widescreen source as a comprimise to the new 4:3 output aspect ratio.

Any decent MPG-2 encoder should allow you to preserve your aspect ratio, but I have no idea how to do that with VSO's softare.

vso's dvixtodvd has bugs, and this is common, especially on the free version
use another app, there are lots to chose from, try using the film machine/CCE engine.,dvd santa,Nero vision express etc etc
you should have spotted this in the preview screen on dvixtodvd,it would have saved you time and a disk

good luck

I'm having a similar problem. All my DVD videos, reguardless of original aspect ratio, even menus that i create, are larger than my TV screen, and have the edges cutoff. Everything is set for NTFS format, 720x480, with 4:3 aspect ratio, and play/look fine on my PC. Tried 3 different conversion programs. Two different DVD players on seperate TV's. The only thing that is common is that I use NERO to burn the DVD files. I've checked all my settings and cant find anything that might cause this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
