I have a question that hopefully some of the Afterdawn folks can help me with. I recently attempted to burn a dvd using two of the better R+ brands, Verbatim and Sony and was unsuccesful and then used a Memorex rewritable disc not regarded as good as the Sony or Verbatim brand and it successfully burned the dvd. My question is are dvd RWs better at burning successfully then the dvd R+ or dvd R-. In other words is their something in the technology of a Rewritable dvd blank that makes them superior to the write once discs in successfully copying.

Rws are great to practice with and keep data/movies on if you want to erase them and use them over again. The r's are permanent,so can only be burned once.

Unsuccessful?

How were those +rs unsuccessful? Failed at lead-in phase which is before the actual burn/ Failed during the middle or end of burn/or can't play on stand alone player or pc dvd drive?

You've got sony/verbatim/and memorex so you have 3 different MID codes on your media. Your burner has built-in programming called firmware. Each batch of discs have their own MID code because many different companies make media for all the name brand and generic brand media. This firmware is what controls what MID codes it is allowed to burn and how fast to burn them.Manufacturers have the newer media tested. After gathering data of this new media, the manufacturer then compiles a list of how that media should be burned. They then issue firmware updates for you DVD-RW drive so they know how to properly burn them.

If you have an older DVD-RW drive and using the newer 8x or 16x media, then the firmware update may be in order.
Those memorex rws are probably the older 4x speed,so your firmware can easily recognize that MID code.

Tell us the exact issues with the sony and verbatim plus discs you have.Locate the MID codes of all 3 brands of media. We also need the exact model # of your DVD-RW drive and the current firmware version. Also tell us what programs you use for the dvd backup process and what you are trying to backup. Here's a free tool to download that will give you all that info:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...

You most likely need a firmware update.Post back that info and we can help find the latest update for your drive. Your sony discs should code out as SonyD11 or Yuden000-T02.The verbatims should code as Mcc-002/003/or 004.

Thanks Saugmon for the reponse. The DVD R+s failed during the actually burn, around the middle, a little over 40% as I recall. when the following on-screen message appeared:

I/O Error

Device [4:0:0] HP DVD Writer 640c ES04CE;| (ATA)

ScsiStatus 0X02
Interpretation: Check Condition

CDB: 2A 00 03 86 E0 00 00 20 00
Interpretation: Write (10) - Sectors 231136 - 231167

Sense Area: 7100030000000012000000000C000000000000000102030405

Interpretation: Write Error

As to my burner, it came with my HP Pavilion a1130n machine that I purchased on July 5th of this year. It is listed according to DCD Identifier as an HP dvd writer 640c [FW ES04]. I don't know if this is what you mean by the model # the specs on it (According to the HP Spec sheet taken from the web site: it lists the following maximum burn speeds of the Hp dvd writer 640c for various media as: DVD R+ write once 16X, DVD R- write once 8X, DVD RW+ rewritable & DVD RW- rewritable at 4X. The Memorex RW+ media I used was 4X max, the Sony DVD R+ was 8X max and the Verbatim DVD R+ was 16X max as listed on the cake box. I don't know exactly what you mean by MID but there is something listed on the DVD Identifier screen as "Media type ID which for Sony is shown as D11, the Verbatims are listed as MCC 004, the Memorex RW+ are listed as INFODISC-A10-001. I don't know if this everything you need but if this info is not sufficient, let me know and I will try to find out anything additional you need. Once again, thanks, Saugmon. I appreciate you help.

Hp 640c is the lightscribe. I got the same drive that came bundled with my HP 1118x-b and it sits in a box because of the overall performance. I'm not a big HP burner fan.I didn't expect much out of this drive, because I mainly need the pc.I coastered out a hitachi maxell +8x right off the gitgo.I had way too many read errors on those backups. The thing that made me pull this drive, I could not re-rip some of those backups. That's the result of all those errors on the backups, despite using the slower 4x burn speed and quality media.

I lost my link to the HP site for the firmware update.I'm not sure what the current version is,buy you may want to check up on it.An updated firmware may help by giving your drive a better writing strategy. You also want to watch out for trying to burn these discs at max speed. Some of these 16x drives will burn 8x media at 12x and 16x if your burnsettings are left at max.

SonyD11: These are the taiwanese spindles of sony +1x-8x and are pretty good. But taiyo yuden makes some of these as well. Those tys, which code as Yuden000-T02, are made in japan.I can get 16x out of these from both yuden and sonyd11 if I desire.

MID: Manufacturers ID number. You have codes like: MCC-003 which would be Mitsubishi chemical corp which are excellent. When we see your mid code,it makes it easier to rule out media quality.
