DVD+R or DVD+RW is the best format, cause it is the most compatible.

Taiyo Yuden brand or Verbatim DataLife Plus brand are excellent blank media.

Those stand alone players will tell you which format that they like, otherwise they'll give you some sort of no disc inserted error.

It all depends on what burner you have. There's a lot of variations between burners, just like the variations between stand alone players. It's all about compatability between all those lasers that will be doing the reading and writing.

If you have a quality booktyping capable DVD-RW drive like: plextor/benq/lite-on/certain sony/LG/ricoh, then definitely the quality ty/verbs/and the japanese spindles of sony/maxell/ and fuji in the plus format. Those booktyped backups will play in more stand alones than the regular plus and the dash formats. This booktyping fools some of those picky stand alones into being able to recognize backups.

If you have a quality drive like NEC/pioneer/and the other sony drives that aren't rebadged liteys, then you'll probably want to give the dash format first crack at it. The dash format is said to be more compatable than the plus.Ty and verbatim are top notch in the dash format. Also ritek and the japanese spindles of maxell/sony/ and fuji.

If you have a generic drive: Those backups may be even tougher on stand alones. Not only is media quality critical, but burner quality is more critical. I have 6 DVD-RW drives and I can see the overall quality of the burner by how those backups are recognized in my stand alones. That's why I have 3 benq up and running, an I/O magic 16x/hp 640c sitting in boxes and a khpermedia +8x being used as a dvd reader.

You'll have to find the right format that suits your burner and stand alone player/s. They will tell you which media and format to use by giving you a near perfect playback.I get most of my media locally.Just look for made in japan for the sony, maxell, and fuji media. Quality is critical! Stand alone players magnefy the problems with poor quality media.

Best media are genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (made in japan) -- these are top notch media.

NOTE: both FUJI & SONY 8X DVD+R "made in japan" are also authentic Yuden media.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.
