It's a neat machine & I highly recommend it (a Toshiba D-R4). I bought it to record television programs directly.

The problem is that I purchased a lot of media before I received the DVD recorder in the mail, and some of it is incompatible--this machine will only record and play back on -R discs. I spent some big bucks on high quality +R Dual Layer media, which doesn't work at all on this machine, and I can't return the +R to the store.

If anyone would like a very good deal on quantity 10 Ridata DVD+R DL and/or quantity 22 Memorex DVD+R DL, please make me an offer. I have no use for it at this time. My email address is [removed]

Ebay them! I got my money back from a lot of left over dash format sony and maxells earlier this year through ebay.

You just may get top dollar because most of those saps don't realize you can buy them for under $2 apiece when on sale!

There's a few sellers at ebay who know what they are selling when it comes to dvd media. I've seen some great auctions with all the identifier programs posted and some test scans on their media.I wouldn't even look at the generic named crap.

There's also a lot of yahoo's who don't know crap about what they got.Last year,a seller was listing fuji 8x rw but had a picture of a fuji -r. He/she thought that just because it had that itty-bitty rw on the logo, that it was a re-writable,not.8x rws were'nt even available at that time, LOL.
It took 3 or 4 emails, but I had them edit out their auction and list them as r's.

That's interesting--I will have to find out what booktyping is! Can you recommend a learning resource? I will google it in the meantime.

I am thankful for the replies--very helpful. It works! Dumb question: Can you booktype burned, nonrewritable media? I ask this because I have a number of burned +R backups that I would like to play on the aforementioned Toshiba recorder (which runs -R only).

There's an old greek proverb that says:
"Don't buy the saddle before own the donkey first".
You can trade 'em with your (really) friends.

The interesting thing was, when I followed the DVD Decrypter settings method, it was already set to yield a DVD-ROM burn result for DVD+R DL media, but was set to "normal" for DVD+R. I changed the "normal" to "DVD-ROM", burned a +R DL disc, and this +R DL disc played in the finicky recorder. Technically I didn't change anything, but obviously the burner took a different approach, one that was more compatible.
