I've been recently converting WMV files to XVID for playback on my dvd player with great results using TMPGenc Plus 2.5. These files are 640x480 and I've successfully converted several to 640x480 XVID files. However, after converting a lower resolution mpg, TMPGenc's XVID setting is locked at 352x240. Now whenever I try to convert a 640x480 video the resulting XVID is always 352x240. I've searched throughout the program's settings but cannot see where this can be changed. Any suggestions?

I would like to verify a few facts here. There are a couple things that seem suspect about your post. First you said you were converting WMV files to XviD with TMPGEnc. TMPGEnc stands for "Tsunami MPG Encoder". It's an Mpeg-2 encoder, NOT an XviD encoder.
You also stated that you were playing these XviD files on your DVD player. VERY few DVD console units play XviD format files.

If from TMPGEnc plus you start the 'Project Wizard', the first choice you have to make, is what format of MPG file you wish to create.
As you click on each option, the info on the right changes. You should see that they have different valid resolutions for each format.
Some only allow 352x240 (VCD with NTSC for example).

Most DVD consoles will play MPG-1 (VCD) and MPG-2 (SVCD/DVD).

Is it possible that you used TMPGEnc to create MPG files for your DVD player, and assumed there were XviD? Perhapse you (or someone else) changed the format of MPG at the beggining of the project wizard and you didn't notice? It does remember the last format you chose, and defaults to that the next time it runs. That might lock you into the low resolution you mentioned.

TMPGEnc can encode with XviD or any other VfW codec. Wouldn't recommend it though. Also there are plenty of standalones that can decode XviD. Most only if in an AVI container which is what TMPGEnc outputs anyway.

You could try frameserving your wmv via AVISynth to VirtualDubMod or try VDubModMPEG2 which I believe has updated wmv support.

TMPGenc Plus will convert to a wide range of formats. After selecting the input file you choose the 'output to AVI' option and then the compression type you want.

My DVD player handles DivX and XviD. The reason I don't convert to SVCD is that the files won't fit on a single CD and I don't have a DVD burner. VCD would reduce the quality too much.

"try VDubModMPEG2 which I believe has updated wmv support"

Thanks I'll try that. I always do the final edit in VirtualDub anyway so this should be perfect.

Wow, I was really really wrong on this one.
Thanks for setting me straight about the number of
Xvid capable consoles out there, and the capabilities of
TMPGenc.
