Hi all. PS2's packed up again but I've decided to have a go at repairing it myself this time.

It looks as though the lasers burnt out again as its refusing to play back-ups, but how can i be sure its not the motor or something?

All i can give as details to go on is. Wont play back-ups or original games.
Goes straight to the browser page and not the disk read error page on start-up.
Not much noise in the way of a disk spinning when a disk is inserted..

I know its looking likely it is the laser but knowin my luck the first time i have a go at fixing it il rapair a part that worked fine. So is the a better way of diagnosin the prob?

Many thanks in advance folks. ;)

So when you insert a disk, does it make a spinning noise, what version is it, i think its v9 that has a motor driver failure.

Yeah it sounds like its tryin to. Kinda makes a bit of a grindin sound then goes to the browser screen. When it was workin i could tell if a back-up had been successful as you could clearly hear the disk spin when the laser had caught the ISO.

V9, i wish. My chips about as old as they come. Ive gotta wind it up 1st and lubricate with moonshine. Well nearly ;)

Think its a neo 1 but dont want ya to get wrong idea cos its prob the oldest thing in the console as jus about everything has been replaced at 1 time or another.

Worst case scenerio is i take the plunge and attempt to replace the laser only to find this isn't the problem.

Perhaps no replies because you're trying to bring back the dead and haven't even taken the time to find out for sure what version your machine is. Also, do you expect many replies when you haven't taken the time to actually CHECK if your cd's are spinning up or not? Kind of hard to help those who don't help themselves first...

this is my advice, sell the parts of ur old PS2 and get a new PS2 even try to get the latest version of PS2. which is V14 slim. that old thing has had it. if it's under 12 month warranty take it to sony and get a new one for free.

Slim Pstwo model no: SCPH-75003 CB (V14) Matrix infinity firmware 1.93 with custom Blue XCM case mod and lights.

Intel Pentium 4(R) Extreme Graphics 2 2.80ghz Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Service pack 2) 792RAM 40GB + external HDD 160GB BENQ DC DW1670 fw 1.03 8x 4x 2.4x DVDRW. Maxell DVD+R 50pk. 8x speed. average speed to burn 8x.
