where can I buy a slim tool/kit in north america? is there one type thats better than the others? I google searched this item and found mostly links to buy from uk sites.
Yes it's .ca (I live in the great white north). I think this is what I need (I have slim ps2). Does this package seem right?
I've been using usbextreme for the last 6 mos, but game compatability sucks...that's the real reason I'm looking into swap magic. Is there better compatability with swap magic? Sorry for all the stupid questions, but I wanna make sure I know what I'm getting into.
Yes and no. Yes, it's the right Swap Magic set, but no, the slim tool will not work unless you have a v12 slimline since the sensor tab below the hinge is blocked off with a metal cover on the newer v13 and v14 slimlines. So it really depends on which slimline you have. A more updated version of the slim tool markets under the title of "Magic Keys 2," I believe, and is compatible with the v13 and v14 consoles.
Compatibility is excellent with the 3.3 and 3.6 sets of Swap Magic. I run a compatibility chart of sorts here ( http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/176791 ), and it shows that there are no games which can't be made to work, one way or another. The main thing is that DVD9 (dual-layer) games must be ripped to single-layer (DVD5) to work, though there aren't very many of them (about a dozen out of thousands of PS2 games). That said, from my testing, about 92% of all games work as straight copies without modification. Counting in some rare cases of rebuilding, ripping to DVD5, patching, or loaders (most of which are listed), the working total is an absolute 100%. Compatibility for the version 2.0 Swap Magic is not nearly as good, but that version is outdated and no longer sold.
It is also possible to modify any slimline for Swap Magic usage for free, as detailed here ( http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/256226 ), but that requires opening the case and breaking the warranty sticker.
OK. I recieved my swap magic and magic switch tools. Just about to try and instal magic tools using the how-to on swap magic's homepage, but I noticed the pics on swap magic's how-to really suck. I have seen a few threads that had good pics on them, but I can't seem to find them now ( I should have bookmarked them). Can anyone help with a link to a GOOD installation tutorial. Thanks. Merry Xmas.
