dvd x copy usage.

Okies, dowloaded and installed DVD x Copy last night cuz I heard it was the number one DVD backup utility.
Couple of questions.
First off, we only had time to backup one DVD, Road to Perdition. I did so on a DVD-RW disc.Reading through the list of supported DVD+RW playback units, our Sony DAV C700 was listed as supported.
Copy went off without a hitch and it would not play at all in our drive. I havent had time to test it other drives yet. Wondering if just because a player can support DVD+RW, if maybe it cannot support DVD-RW, or if there is some kind of copy protection that I need to be aware of, and if so, a way to work around it?
Second of all, DVD X Copy flags backups AS backups so that they cannot be copied. Im pretty sure I know the answer to this, but is there any way to remove this functionality?

You bought the wrong prog
DVD2One is the one you really want,surely?
It gives you a DVD-R/RW that is virtually identical in quality to original DVD.
If you have a DVD-9 (dual layered) then you can take menu,subtitles and other extras out so as to fit it all on 1 disc.

YES CD-R IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO CD+R , THE SAME AS DVD-R/RW & DVD+R/RW btw.

Heh. Im a fool... Replace all instances of 'CD-XX' in the above post with 'DVD-XX' and were on the right page...
Sorry, was in a rush when I posted this 8)
That being said, is DVD2One still the option I want? I have only heard the hype about DVD x copy, so decided to buy and try it out.
I basically just want to be able to backup originals, and maybe (if its even possible) be able to backup those backups for play in standalone DVD units.

DVD X Copy will break everything over 4.7GB into 2 DVD-R's , whereas DVD2One will slightly compress if needed after the menu & extras have been taken out and your left with a single DVD.
Thats the all important matter for me...I dont wanna have to get up half way thru to load another disc into my (set top)stand alone player.
My Sony DVP NS305 hasn't refused to play anything to date.
P.S. DVD2One wouldn't be needed if your gonna back up back up's cos you'll have already re-authored it to fit (?) DVD onto a single DVD-R.
All you'd need to do is run Smartripper then jump str8 to Nero...

So let me get this straight:
DVD2One - use this to backup the original
Smartripper - use this to create some kind of image file from the backup, to allow another dvd burning app to create a dvd disc (wasnt much info on the smartripper page)
Nero - Said app to burn the disc from the image
That pretty much how it works? Once again, thank you so much for answering these newbish questions. It is much appreciated 8)

Smartripper 1st to grab .vob(s) & .ifo(s)
DVD2One to exclude all extras and bring final size down below 4.7Gb
Nero to burn (I use IFO mode personally altho some prefer ISO mode instead)

if your doing back of back ups then just Rip with Smartripper (but take all .bup .ifo & .vob files)
then run nero ... finito

Its true dvd2one will back up a movie recalc the bitrate to squeeze the movie onto one disc. Its comes at a cost, ie quality. DVDxcopy will give you an exact copy of a movie over two discs, no loss of quality. DVD2one will not. DVD xcopy platinum is scheduled for release later this month, it will have the added functionality of squeezing a movie onto one disc. When its released forget DVD2one!

I can't dissagree more on the issue of DVD2One vs. DVDXCopy. DVD2One is a quick and dirty short cut to getting DVD9 (dual layer) to fit DVD5 blanks (4.7GB) but the quality suffers a lot because to do it properly one needs to decode and re-encode after reducing the requied quality levels by increasing compression which wold take a lot more time but do it right. On ethe other hand if you want something quick and dirty it does the job with what I felt was a quality level well below Divx. This seems pretty weak since the same Divx will fit on a CD-R and you blow a full DVD blank to use DVD2One.
DVDXCopy is also a lot easier to use and you get perfect replicas though DVD9s will require you feed it 2 DVD blanks. DVDXCopy removes all files if it is closed or finishes writing. This makes it problematic to use other burners if you so desire. But if you either need to make more than one copy or you want to use another burner, just drag and drop the VIDEO_TS folder to another directory when it finishes ripping and it can't nuke em.
I am not sure of anyway to get rid of the boilerplate they put in the beginning without editing the IFO file so it is not missed if deleted. Anyone have a quick fix?

Do you get warning screens that you cannot skip & can you back up a back up after using DVD X Copy?
Personally I do not want to load another DVD whilst watching a movie.
All said & done : EACH TO THEIR OWN !: )-~

DVD2One's problems:
No episode discs.
No menus.
No extras.
(yes, you CAN do these, but so can you with IFOEdit, if you prefer painful way)
DVDXCopy's problems:
Problems with some episode releases.
Two discs for DVD-9s.

So with all I have read I still cannot find out what is best to make backup copies of my DVD collection. I recently installed the latest HP 300i DVDR+RW CDR-RW combo unit and the programs supplied with it say there is a DLA problem or the disc is dirty. I cannot find another 300i user to find out how to overcome problems that keep me from making copies. I have never tried to copy DVD's and am open to suggestions. I found DVD X COPY, DVDECHO and their support line says they will both do what I want. It looks like after reading your thread like it might not make me exact copies. What is a novice to do?

It's impossible to make exact copies of DVD-9 discs, since recordable discs can only hold 4.36GB and DVD-9 can hold 8.5GB -- and DVD-9 -sized recordables dont exist and most likely never will.

herbsman: Which only store 4.36GB per side anyway, making them exactly as useful as two blank DVD-Rs -- you still need to split the movie in half if you prefer to maintain everything without re-enoding.

Thanks for this info about disc storage. What about a program to overcome the DLA etc roadblock of making backup copies. Some compress to store it all on one dics but as I read this has a loss of quality. Is that loss in audio or video. I wouldn't mind having to use 2 discs on some backups, if I HAD TOO....I am still at a loss not having any experience with the different programs available. How do I make a determination as to what program tp buy. I hate the thought of wasting money. Thanks again ! ! !

I would personally wait couple of weeks and buy DVDXCopy Platinum when it comes out -- it can do both, shrink to one disc or split to two discs.

Will DVDXCopy Platinum still cost the same $99?
Will it do episodes without taking one episode (quality) and the rest of the episodes (massive loss of quality)?
Will you still get warning screen saying 'this is a copy'?
Will you be able to back up a back up..?

I don't know the exact specs, so I can't comment specifically on those questions -- but I'm 99% sure -- due the legal reasons -- that the warning will stay there and that you can't backup a backup.

I'm using DVD2One over DVDXCopy because I dont realy want extras or Thai (etc) subtitles!: )
I backed up HEAT last night to test DVD2One cos it is 7Gb even without extras,subs,various audio
I didnt think there was hardly any loss of quality at all.
Anyway I'm not judging which is best out of DVD2One Vs. DVDxCopy...I know which I prefer (at the moment) and have added my two-pennies worth so I'll now shut my 'newbie' mouffff.
