Copying PS2 Games - Does PS2 have to be chipped?

I am an old hand burning/copying DVD/CD etc - but PS2's are a new ball game (I have never played one in my life!). I have bought my 4 nephews different PS2 games for Xmas but would like to copy the originals so that they can have them as stocking fillers.

I understand how to actually burn the PS2 Discs, but does the PS2 have to be chipped? Is there software out there that will copy the disc and let it run on the console without a chip? I have searched the net and find conflicting answers.

Any help gratefully received

You do not need to have it chipped, but the consoles do need to be modified in some way to play the copied discs.. as 3dluis said there is some software called "swap magic" that used in conjunction with a case modification lets you play the copied games on your ps2. There are numerous ways to modify the console depending on what version the ps2 is... if you check out the link in my signature that says about swap magic you'll find out more on there about it and what you need.
