Unlocking a mobile phone permits it to be used with sim cards from other companies. The V551 has the capability of being used throughout the world. When I travel, rather than use the sim card from the company t home I purchase a sim card from the local provider and use it. This way I have a local number and am paying local rates for calls. Lat trip I returned with a collection of sim cards.

Locally, unlocking a phone permits you to move it from one carrier to another if you are unhappy with the service. WHen you get the phone they are generally locked to a single provider preventing you from obtaining a sim card and cganging your provider.

I have the V551 and I had to pay to have it unlocked. There is someone that is able to interlock the phone over the internet. You download a small program and run it. The program connects and is able to do the unlocking. I used it and it worked well. The cost was somewhere around $25.

I was unable to find a free unlocking code or service.
