Hey, I was going to buy some DVD+R media discs and I've realized they have a number beside them saying "8X". So does that mean I can only burn on this sort of media if my burner can only burn at 8X? Or I have to burn slower or at that speed? Please, help.

It means the media is rated up to that speed (x8). Your burner may only be rated up to 4x or 2x etc. and will still burn the media fine at the slower speeds.

There is also a school of thought that the best burning is achieved by burning the media at a lower speed than at its highest rating.

Just to add to the mix (and excitement) some burners are able to burn certain types of media at higher speeds than rated on the media or sometimes not even achieve the rated speed.
