First, I legally own a copy of all three Tremors DVDs. Second, I have two boys who love these movies, but have absolutlty no regard for taking care of them. Third, I'm a senior software design engineer who's relatively new to the science of DVD video processing.
With that said, I thought it would be both practical, and a good exercise in learning about DVD utilities, to protect my original DVDs, by ripping the three movies from the originals and combine all three on a new single DVD. I own copies of Uleads DVD Workshop, Vegas Video 3.0, and TMPGEnc Pro, and have downloaded DVD2AVI and several other video utilities.
Tremors 1 and 2 were a snap. I used cladDVD to rip the movies to create the .D2V and .AC3 project files. TMPGEnc loaded these files and created a couple of beautiful MPEG-2 files. But when it came to ripping Tremors 3 I hit a brick wall. Nothing seems to work.
cladDVD would simply hang while ripping the DVD. So I switched to SmartRipper and was able to successfully rip the .VOB files. I loaded the .VOB files into DVD2AVI and created a .D2V project file, but when I tried to open this in TMPGEnc, all I got was an error message that said it was not a valid file (even though it appears ok when opened up in a text editor). And forget about using the Create AVI option in DVD2AVI. The AVIs created by this feature are hit and miss when it comes to getting ALL FRAMES in the original .VOB. AVI's stitched together using this route have gaps in the video at the VOB boundaries. This would be a tremendously useful feature if it actually worked!
Undaunted, I then try a different approach. I renamed one of the .VOB files to .MPG, opened it up in Vegas Video, and dragged the file into the track window. This worked like a charm for the video track, except there wasn't any audio track. Ok, I figured that since I have the .WAV file from DVD2AVI, all I need to do is just add it to a new audio track. Another dead end. The video and audio are totally out of sync. And it's not simply a matter of aligning them to fix it. It appears that the audio and video were sampled at different rates. When I sync the tracks in one spot, they're out of sync in another .... sheesh!
I've tried every imaginable way I can think of to get an audio/video MPEG-2 file from the .VOB files of Tremors 3, but absolutely nothing works.
Do any video GURU's have any ideas on this? Any and all suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.
