refurb PS2 wont load GT4

I was wondering if anyone out there is having a problem with GT4 loading on an older refurb PS2. My friend has one and it will load every game that he has, except for GT4. It just says disc read error and thats it. Is there some kind of update that needs to be done to it or is it just toast. Thanks for your input.

it is an original copy and the ps2 is not modded. We were just playing it last night on another friend of mine's ps2 and it was playing fine. It is the wierdest thing i have ever seen. Thanks again.

GT4 is a DVD9 or Dual Layer DVD so your friends PS2's laser might be used alot and can no longer read DVD9 Games like GT4 and 50 Cent: BP. But you can mod it and shrink GT4 to be a DVD5 or normal DVD game I have a GT4 thats 2.57 GB. You can just buy Swap Magic and a slide card/slim tool for 20 $
