I have a v4 PS2 and installed the Magic 3.1 Plus mod chip. I can play original game discs if I disable the chip by holding Reset for 5 seconds, but burned ones won't play. I've read several posts on different pages about potential problems, mostly being DVD media used. I'm sure it's not my soldering job, as I've checked out all solder points.

I put in a burned DVD and after a few seconds of reading, I get the "Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 disc" screen.

I don't know if this is related, but playing a DVD movie works, but the bottom half of my screen has a bix black box covering it.

Some people even say the modchip itself could be bad, due to the Magic 3.1 Plus having a high failure rate.

Anyone have any ideas?

if it only reads an original DVD disk (not a DVD-9 original) only in disabled mode, it's your installation job.

the only problems I've ever had out of the Magic chips is they are non compatible with burnt DVD Dual Layer backups, they play original dual layer but not backed up even if it's patched for PTP.

you should play all original and backed up (dvd or cd) PS2 (non dual layer) games by tapping reset from standby, all PS1 games and dual layer originals by holding the reset from standby till the eject lite (blue) lights then release.

FWIW I've done allot of mods with Magic chips and they IME do not have a high failure rate, installation is the main cause of failure, getting the chip or motherboard to hot using to large of an iron tip or not knowing what you are doing.
