I have a question about dvd recording media. Is there any reason that a dvd +RW disc would be able to burn a disc when a dvd +R can't. I have only been able to burn with rewritable discs for about the last month. Prior to that I had no problems using dvd +R discs. I use the dvd burner that came with my HP Pavilion a1130n which is listed as model HP DVD Writer 640c. I am getting ready to take my machine in to a tech to have the dvd burner looked at. I used two good dvd +R brands (Verbatim and Sony) which both failed and a DVD +RW brand (Memorex) which worked. So, to aid a relatively new person, is there something in the technology of dvd RWs that would allow a successful burn when a dvd R won't. Factoring in that I may have a mechanical problems with the burner itself. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Verbatim and sony are some very good quality media. I also have that HP 640c burner. Having used 6 different pc burners, there are differences between these. I've heard many complaints about HP burners. That 640c came bundled with my HP a1118b and after about a dozen test burns,I swapped it with my original benq-1620.

I had a burn error using Maxell-002-00 full hub right off the bat. That 1620 only had 1 burn error this year on 1000+ backups. Re-ripping those HP backups were impossible.Too many read errors so it gave me crc errors. My standalones also had a harder time reading them, whereas my benq backups play everywhere.

First thing to do is go to HP's main website and update that firmware. That may help with the write strategy. The main difference between +r and +rw would be the MID code. The firmware may be able to handle that MID code for the memorex +rw,but the sony and verbatim MID codes may not be listed on that firmware. You had success with some other +rs.

Then go into device manager under IDE-ATA/Atapi controllers and make sure they are in DMA or UDMA mode.Make sure they are not in pio mode.If primary/secondary channel is in pio mode, uninstall driver and reboot. If more than one channel in pio mode, uninstall one controller at a time, reboot. Windows xp should hook those channels back up in DMA/DMA mode upon reboot.
