I've just purchased some Plextor 16x DVD+Rs (Yuden000 T03) and they turn out to be fairly average...They're good until about 3 gig, when i start getting pif spikes.

Anyways, if i were to get some Taiyo Yuden (Yuden000 T03) 16x DVD+Rs, would they be different quality?

I guess what i want to know is, is the dye the only thing that determines the quality of the DVD? Do DVDs from different brands but with the same media codes differ in quality?

Blighter, if both lots of discs were coded the same then it would be fair to say they would be from the same manufacturer. I am not really clued up on discs but to me thats how it appears. No doubt someone will come along and tell us both.

Creaky is good at this.... he knows his media, and I always refer to him as I learned a lot just by reading his comments!

It's my understanding that dye lots are the same but can change from time to time. If it's from the same manufacturer and they didn't change factories and have the same codes then the dye is supposed to be the same! But, as time goes on.....factories can change and it's posted as soon as possible. Check out: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
I actually talked to one of the people from DigitalFaq about their Media Guide and how often it's updated......the person was a little vague about it but gave me the impression that they have a group of people testing and updating all the time! It's pretty informative and I use their info exclusivly.

Yuden is a top notch media, you can't go wrong with that. The most important part is DON'T BURN at 16X, even if it's 16X, the best speeds is still 4X or if you want a little faster then 8X is good enough. I would never go beyond 8X period.

Go here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/265933 for more info on burning at 16X versus 4X burning. Someone/somebody claims that burning at 16X will still produce the same quality as burning at 4X in results, but when I asked for any valid "evidences/proof" none of them were able to show it to me. Apparently, you'll see what I mean in that thread, which I've provided tons of 4X burning vs my 3 tries of 16X.

Alcohol.... I use Taiyo Yuden DVD+R, 8x silver thermals and white inkjet hub printables exclusively now! Just finished my 300 batch and bought 200 more. Not one bad one out of the bunch.

I used to burn at 8x and still never had a bad one. Slowed it down to 4x just in case. Don't want to break what's not broken!! hahahaha

@IHoe

How's it going buddy? Haven't seen you in a while. Yeah, I don't recommend anyone to go beyond 8X even if it's top notch media like Yuden, Verbs or Maxell (Hitachi - mij). I still burn all my 16X Verbs and 8X Yuden at 4X only. That is indeed the best, safest and most recommended speeds for burning. Like I stated on the link above on 16X vs 4X burning, which I've tested and experienced it on my own eyes with burning at 16X on 3 of my MCC004, and I can't believe the results man. All of them 3 discs that I burned at 16X has poor quality when I scanned with Nero CD-DVD Speed.

well....... I must admitt that I've tried the 16x burn but it's not worth it if the disk doesn't match the quality or the longevity and you have to redo the movie!! I don't get coasters since I joined AfterDawn (over 700 burns after AD!) and I've been away because of Hurricane Wilma..... I do flood restoration!!!! ahhahaha made a bundle helping the people that got water damage! Also my electric was out for over 8 days..... but that's nothing..... there are people out here that still don't have power and it's over a MONTH!!!! I consider myself lucky!

Welcome back, IHoe, and a belated "Thank You!" I use 8X inkjet printable TY almost exclusively. I use 8X or 16X Verbs inkjet printable from time to time... I burn @ 8X on both the 8X and 16X TY and Verbs... Did a few scans myself, and my 8X burns were just as good as my 4X (PIF 2 or lower, < 200 total) I won't be going any faster than 8X, though... Even though 12X on the TY looks good as well...

Erm ok...I'm confused by this. I was just wondering if the quality of the Plextor DVD+R's would be different to the quality of the Taiyo Yuden DVD+R's even though they both have the Yuden000 T03 code? Because tbh, i'm not that impressed with the Plextor +R's with my Lite-on 1635S or BenQ 1640 and was wondering if it was worth buying the Taiyo Yuden +R's instead?

@Blighter..... if you Plextor +Rs have the same manufacturer code as Taiyo Yuden then it's a great disk..... and it came from one of the best producers of quality disks that you can get! I didn't know that Plextor +Rs used Taiyo Yuden manufacturers! good to know so if I see them in a store I know I can rely on them for quality!

@alkohol
I went over to my friends house the other day, and i looked at his pc. He was burning a DVD at 16x and the media manufacturer was CMC magnetics. I almost had a heart attack right there. I got him to do a Nero disc quality scan, and it was horrible, but the playback seemed ok, on his non-HD 20" tv. He said he didn't see any skipping or freezing, and was happy/proud of his burning abilities. Oh well. I told him he is probably going to have problems burning that fast, and what's the big f***in hurry?? I can wait for a 4x or 8x burn, because i know it will come out fine, and not have to be re-done. 16x burns for me are just for the science/testing of the practice, i don't need, or want to burn that fast. Even if the movie came out fine, i would always be looking for problems, and i dont need the paranoia.

Fair enough. It's just that the Nero CD/DVD Speed scans show PIF blocks that go up to 7 Pifs on both the lite-on and benq...i might try it on my pioneer 110d when i get bak home too...

Still, if you guys insist that they're good discs.

I got them from www.svp.co.uk I bought them for an introductory price, so not bad value!

I thought that DVDs mainly only skip or freeze on standalone dvd players if the standalones were fairly old or not that great...

Anyways, thanks for the responses guys..

Also...everyone seems to recommend 4x max speed...bt wot if i can't get that low? Most of my media can only be burned at 6x, 8x, 12x or 16x. Is there anyway i can get the speeds lower than this?

Thanks guys

all this talk about Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD+R and nobody even mentioned my name? LOL..just playing guys...

it's too bad they're not QUITE readily available here in the U.S. to the public or you know a certain doc would have his grubby hands ALL over them by now, i'm still waiting on my shipment from Taiyo Yuden, looks like i'm going to be a "tester" for them from this point on... :)

i'll update when i get them in my hands, i've been personally waiting for these YUDEN000T03s for some time now, as i BELIEVE i was the first to mention them being avail. here in the U.S. come early next year...2006, from various online retailers... :)
