i want to get and hd loader but im not sure if you could use a hard drive less than 40 thats what they say you need but im not sure

How small is the drive? If its 20gb or over then you should be able to use it you just wont get lots of games on the drive, if it's less than 15gb i would not attempt to use it as hdloader uses 4gb of the hdd which means you would not get a whole lot of games on the drive.

30gb, should be able to, they just recommend you use a lest a 40gb so that you have anuff space for a few games but 30 should do fine i've seen folks use less BUT seeing how it is a western digital you could run into problems, western digital hdd have a record of not fitting into the Ps2 without some sort of modification to either the hdd slot or the network adaptor so you might run into problems

well if it doesnt fit cant i just use the cable that connects the motherboard to the hdd

you can not use an IDE cable to connect the HDD to the network adapter, the adapter is male, the HDD is female, IDE cables are male to male connectors.

any 3.5" internal HDD will fit inside the PS2 expansion port, and most can be fitted to the network adapter with some modification but with the price of HDDs these days it's more practical to just get a 160 + Gig drive. Tigerdirect has a 160g Maxtor Diamond10 drive for about 30 bucks after rebate.
