I'm trying to convert avi files to a dvd compliant format. But whatever software I try my PC locks up. I've tried DVDSanta, VSO DivXtoDVD, WinAVI etc etc. No matter what I use my Pc just freezes up, it got to 6.49% on VSO DivXtoDVD, the only way I can get my pc back to life is to reboot it.I have even tried Nero Recode but that's the same as well. I've seen something similar to this posted elsewhere on the site and have tried to find it but without success, so any help would be appreciated.

My specs are

AMD Athlon XP2700
512MB Corsair PC3200 (2x256)
ABit NF7S V2.0 Mobo
Windows XP Pro
2 Western digital hard drives (1x80gig, 1x200gig both 8meg caches)

I have the latest K-lite mega codec pack just downloaded earlier today and mainly use Nero 6 for burning the end product. Is there also any way I can check the codecs etc needed to convert are actually working?

Many thanks in advance.

Rob

Hi Rob, I am having the same problems as you discribe.
I have used VSO DivXtoDVD, Nero vision, ran it through DivX repair and AVIfixed. Even tried studio 9! They all lock up the pc.
My specs-Xp sp2
Athlon2000xp
Gigabyte mb
768g ram
160g HDD
Its starting to become a bit annoying.
Can anybody please help us!

I just tried defragging my hard drive, shutting down as many processes as was safe to do so, changing the settings to improve windows performance rather than it looking better, defragging page file/mft etc but still no joy. DMA is enabled, my drivers are up to date, using the latest codec pack etc still no joy.

I'm stuck

i had the same problem. all i did to fix it was clean out my fans and vents on my computer. if you have a newer computer it may support temperature sensors built into the motherboard and cpu. go to download.com and get a program called speedfan (it's free). it can tell you the temps and rpms of the fans. next step is to get a can of compressed air, you can get it at the office supply or computer store. open up your computer case and CAREFULLY (without tipping the can upside down or to the side) blow out the fans on the case, power supply, and especially the cpu. i did it while the computer was running. put it back together and check your temps again. my cpu temp dropped 20 degrees celsius. after that, i couldn't crash my computer if i tried. give it a try. just be carefull not to blast it too close or to hard. hope this helps.

I've recently done that anyway. I only recently fitted a rear exhaust, two 8cm fans and a front intake/exhaust. I cleaned the cpu fan etc while I was at it. This has stopped my pc from occasionally resetting itself, which it used to do before.

Ok guys I think I have solved my problem. I also had the problem when opening the folder containing my downloaded files and this fix solved all problems I had with pc locking up. Only used DivXtoDVD so far and so far so good. Also turned off video preview so not sure if that helped either.
Heres the link, good luck and let us know how you get on.

I think I'll try that as well in the next few days. Thanks for that.
