Hi, I just joined and would like some advice on good media.
I use a Plextor burner and have no trouble checking the media ID, but can you tell before checking the ID when purchasing? I noticed that my old reliable Fuji discs aren't made in Japan anymore (Taiyo Yudens or TYG02) so I don't trust them anymore. I usually use the "made in Japan" rule, but now almost everything I find is made in Taiwan.
As I understand it, Mitsubishi (MCC?) has moved their plant to Taiwan awhile back, so they are the exception to the "Taiwan" rule. Are their others as well? I am currently using TDK's (TTG02), are these still good ones?
I want to purchase discs that have the writing surface so I can use the cd/dvd marker on them. I don't like the plain tops or the printable ones since I don't like wasting precious printer ink making a label (you can't see the pretty pictures in your DVD player anyway).
I also see several of you guys talking about Verbatims, but the only one's I ever see are made in Taiwan. Are these fakes? I have read that some of the Verbatims changed to the crappy CMC discs, is this true, and how can I tell the good one's from the bad?
I am in nearing the end of my process of re-burning a bunch (68 of them) movies onto better media. My first media purchase (before I knew anything) were the dreaded Memorex's.....ugh.
Whew, I hope I am not overwhelming anyone here with my questions. Thanks a bunch.
P.S. I have been using Plextor drives with the CloneDVD2/AnyDVD program for about 2 years with no problems, as nearly all of my movie backups are on single-sided discs.
Always looking for the good stuff.

I am currently using Verbatim discs made in Taiwan, branded MCC and haven't had any problems as yet, I cannot find any made in Japan where I live so I trust the Taiwan ones. As for the amount of ink your printer uses printing on Ink Jet printable blanks is minimal, I have done over 50 and still haven't recharged my ink. Yep there is pretty pictures on your DVD player but by spending a few cents I also have pretty pictures on my DVD disc.

I'm with Alcohol on this...... and Gwendolin is right about the ink used on the printable DVDs...... I just changed my ink cartridges.... over 150 disks printed and I also used the printer for business! I think that's a good deal! The black cartridge went first, then one by one the color ones went.

Not to mention that you can get all 6 cartridges for the Epson R200/R300 series for around $20 at private abacus!!! I got over 150 discs (along with a few photos and several documents) out of my cartridges as well....

Thanks for the help guys! I just wanted to know if my TDK's are good one's too (TTG02), since I don't know all the codes. Are these Taiyo Yudens? I did a PIF scan on my Plextools and the average was about 12 (peak spike, 180). This seems good, but I don't know what great PIF numbers should be even after reading those charts.
Thanks again for the info.
Always looking for the good stuff.

NO, definitely NOT Taiyo Yudens..those are TDK's OWN manufactured media which i PERSONALLY detest with a passion~!! yes, i'm biased, but i HAVE used them in the past with WORSE results than my CMC MAG memorex's...if that tells you anything~ :)
i am probably one of the very FEW people here on AfterDawn that will tell you to DITCH THAT CRAP TDK stuff and try the others, but, you have to trust me in the sense that i've actually USED about 80% of ALL the media OUT THERE in the market today at one time or another~ :)
plus, my extensive use of Taiyo Yudens and Verbatims, with a few hundred Maxell's thrown in there should account for something...i didn't get my nickname docTY for nothing :) if you have questions regarding Taiyo Yudens, i will be more than happy to oblige, but, PERSONALLY, i hate TDK's own crap...ie. TTGO2/TTG01/TTH01/TTH02/TDK001/TDK002/TDK003...if it starts with "TT" or "TDK", i will NOT let it near my burners...that crap, TO ME AND ME ALONE, is worse than CMC MAGs...i'll take those Cmags (memorex) ANYDAY over TDKs stuff~
docTY~
Recommended Media:
Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Thanks for the info docTY! I will be returning those TDK's (thankfully, I only burned 4 movies on them).
I want to take advantage of the Verbatims on sale at Office Depot, but unfortunatly, the closest one is 40 minutes away. If I come across the made in Taiwan variety, should I still buy them?
P.S., I have read the "media ID Guide" at the top of the forum, but how can I tell if some of the ID's from the same company are good? I know to avoid CMC (and now TTG), but I am unsure which others are bad.
Thanks again for the help.

Hey, anyone tried the "BulkPaq" DVD media yet? I've seen some good reviews on their 8x +R media and it's quite inexpensive.

@PingII - i have indeed been unfortunate to use Bulkpaq "media". they're well known for bad media and FAKE media

THANKS for the advice. I won't bother getting any BulkPaq. FYI, I just took back some TDK 8X +R media to CompUSA today. I tested 6 discs and none of them would burn clean. They had a sale on 100 pack at $50 off the list price. They shouldn't even give these away.

It's funny that you mention TTG0x's as bad, they are listed as top quality on digitalFAQ (which I find to be a pretty reliable site). Edit: I saw the note at the bottom about TTG02 "legal fakes". Since I'm not sure my TDK's are the fakes (and by your advice...thanks for testing :D), I will return them and look for some Verbatims or other "Japans" to get the Yudens.
Update: I got the last two packs of Verbatims (Taiwan) at Office Depot, and they turned out to be MCC. I will be keeping those unless users here think they're aren't that good.

@burngod
you should be JUST FINE w/ those MIT Verbs, actually, not including my DVD+R DL Verbatims (which are ALL made in singapore), ALL my Verbs are MADE IN TAIWAN, i haven't had ANY problems with them... :)
while my buddy creaky has the advantage of obtaining Taiyo Yuden produced media under the Verbatim branding, i have yet to see it here in the U.S....those lucky brits! :) hehe
so, anyways, i WILL agree with you that digitalfaq is a VERY useful site with a LOT of good info, however, their ranking system on media based on 1st tier, 2nd tier, etc...is NOT up to date, and with "brands" and "manufacturers" changing so frequently, whether it be their quality control or advancing technology utilizing a new dye or manufacturing process, until digitalfaq updates their website, i use it ONLY as a "guide", nothing there in terms of "media ranking" is etched into stone as a LOT of newbies believe it is~ :)
btw, i'm NOT implying you are a "newbie," i've seen MANY senior members throw the "digitalfaq" link around like it IS THE AUTHORITY on media, believing EVERYTHING they say when it is simply just another "matter of opinion" by the owners/webmaster of THAT particular website~ :)
just like the advice i'm giving you now, it's MY OWN opinion, you can take what you want and discard the rest...but, FOR ME AND MY VARIOUS BURNERS and countless pieces of media later, EXPERIENCE tells ME what i should or should not use...and i often times recommend what has WORKED WELL for me...it's up to YOU to make the decision as to WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU :)
trial and error my friend, as per the digitalfaq's ranking of TDK's TT coded media, MY OPINION of it is they can shove it up their a$$~ :p (i hope that is not too vulgar of a statement...that being said, it's only MY OPINION and nobody else's) :)
