Maxtor, size = whatever you want. Games average 3gigs, so calculate how many you want. Yes, the dms4 is very good. And, i think the pro has a hd advance program built in (or at least you can install it), so you don't need to buy that program.
You do have a fat (older) ps2 right? You will also need a sony network adaptor to put a hd in it.

all i did was make a USB hardrive. How? go to a pc shop and purchase an external usb case for a 3.5 hdd. then purchase a cheap 200Gb or wat ever hdd that u want, then they just clip into each other. that way you can save up to about $100. no kidding! i did it with my ps2 and it works perfect. if you r planning to do the same as me, i suggest u get a MAXTOR hdd. they r #1. note: to use maxtor hdd you need a program that u can download from maxtor.com called MAX-BLAST 4. It will format the maxtor hdd for u,.

Would the Maxtor HD need to be formated with the MAX BLAST 4 formatter, or can it be formatted while hooked up to a PC and just "formatted"?

HD Advance will format the hd, or you can use Win HIIP to format the hard drive direct connected to a PC. Maxtors and Seagate Barracuda Hard drives are compatible with the netword adaptor. I have a Seagate Barracuda 120GB that has 111GB after it is formatted and have about 30 games on it with room to spare.
