BURN DVD TO CD-RS?

I have only just started (as of last night)
to rip DVDs, etc. My question is this: Are you able to, after ripping a DVD, burn that ripped movie to a CD-R as opposed to a DVD-R and have it work within any DVD player? 'Cause I'm reading around about DVD ripping and burning and such and came across this information and wanted to confirm it.

You can rip a movie then burn to a cd-r. The question here is, what format? (DivX, VCD, SVCD)? If you wan't to play your backups in your home dvd player, then your home dvd player must be able to play VCD or SVCD format.
