NEC 2510a Firmware now 2.8

Recently flashd up to 2.8 from 2.6 and now doesn't perform burns like it used to

Is there a way of diagnosing problem and a fix - can I revert to a previois version

When I try and burn movies it completes the burn, but the last few chapters always seem to be corrupted - they freeze. If I look at the underside of the dvd it self, there seems to be a quite thick 1-2mm dark area 50mm in from the outer edge - I'm assuming that dvds are burned from the inside to the outer edge.
I'm using Verbatim DVD-R 8X certified.
Something to diagnose the problem would be useful if there is such a thing.
Thanks
