PS2 HDD Detection Troubleshooting: Help!

my hardware: hdd>network adaptor>ps2.

my sofeware: HDLoader, Winhiip, DMS HDD formatter

my problem:
-the network adaptor, along with the hdd was removed
-when reassembled, hdloader could no longer detect the hdd
-verified formatting by placing hdd in pc and running winhiip
-reformatted hdd using winhiip; no detection
-attempted using a second hdd, again formatted with winhiip; no detection

my opinion: since the setup was working for some time without difficulties, i can justifiably state that the hdd is properly formatted and compatible with my ps2 & network adaptor. as well, my ps2 has not faltered at any time, allowing me to believe the problem lies elsewhere. my best guess is that the network adaptor got sand in its vagina during the initial removal which has left me confused, aggravated and downright dumdfounded.

my questions:
-is there anyway to test the network adaptor to ensure that the IDE interface is functional?
-if one was to connect their ps2 with a network adaptor and then successfully play any game online, it would be reasonable to assume that the ps2 and network adaptor could communicate with each other, right? however, without any online games handy, i cannot test for communication in this manner. is their any other method by which i could verify communication between the network adaptor and ps2?
