Problems with Windows Media Player

First of all, this is my first entry in the forum, so apologies if I have posted in the wrong area.

I have a laptop that has a bog standard cd drive.

Recently, I downloaded a movie and tried to play it using Real Player but it kept on stalling and looping like an audio cd with a scratch on it, with the only option being to reboot.

I then tried to start it using Windows Media Player, but was getting "error downloading codec".

I've got the codec, but the movie kept on stalling like Real Player was.

Downloaded Windows Media Player 10, but movie is still stalling.

The movie is stalling in a different place to when I was playing it in Real Player, so doubt that it is a problem with the movie.

Any ideas on what I can do?
