Simple question really after all that bluster with the title.

When burning your discs, do you go right to the max amount of storage, or do you play safe and drop back to say 4,100 or so?

I usually go the whole hog and I must say, quality discs = so far no adverse effects.

i set mine @ 4360mb and only on 'good' media, heck, my burner has never seen bad media, unless i run a scan for someone who does use it, then i get them to switch brands...

Well I live dangerously and close to the edge! But then again I only use TY or Verbatim and keep the burn speed to 1/2 of what the drive will write. Even the ones over a year old still no problems.

I guess my post is a little confusing or I'm a little slow :o)
Nah - I burn at 8x on a 16x burner or 4x on a 8x burner.

@ binkie.......... a.k.a. darthnip's hunny !!!

so ummmm.......... post up some disk scans then... lets see how they look then.

i'm curious.... i have burned at speeds of 8x, but never any higher, i was testing out some burns, and they managed to yeild me good results. of course they were MCC 004's abd rated at 16x, but i burn them all the time @ 4x

i only use top notch media (used to use bad media), but still stick to 4300MB regardless (in fact i did 4300MB to pretty much ALL my bad media and it didn't stop the disks failing/skipping/being uncopyable/being unwatchable). it's just not worth quibbling about a few megabytes of space when you see just how close to the edge 430MB really is

@ binkie.............. my oh my !!!

if alkohol or doc saw that scan............ a rating of 43.... ouch, and on a TY at that...

if i may give you a tip, slow the speeds down to half of what you do now, i am sure you will get better results!! and a better score, possibly 90 or higher !

I have the epson r320 - love it though after like 400 or so covers the dvd tray is starting to act up - but I have the extended warranty! And what a time to take it back to best buy for service but xmas :0)
For settings on TY - full face I use 21 X 119 - non full face I use 42 x 119.
I think I'll have to find another disc that has a better scan and edit my post ;)

Most of the time I am at 4300mb but sometimes I set it to 4380 when I have a very large movie to compress or a complete DVD9 to DVD5. No real hiccup with my Q-Scans either way. But either way I always remove unwanted audio, including all audio for CC.

@ binkie... i think i fingered it out... i set mine to 119 and 19 i think.... just 1 mm off the full size. my first one i did, i blotched it all up, i think it was set for a 8cm disk instead of a 12cm disk. so rather then waste a disk, i printed on a regular cd-r for trial purposes and waaalaaa........ got it... looks good too. now i just need to figure out how to add text to them.... you know, dates, what media it is, how fast i burned it, etc..

@ scubabud.... long time no see, where ya been hiding ?

I've always set mine to 4360MB - 4400MB (more like 80% 4400MB and 20% 4360MB), so far I've never expeirienced any issues at all whatsoever.

I've been using default setting with recode2 of 4460mb and have had few coasters with my, so far, trusty TDKRW0404 (2 yrs), burning at 2.4X (DVD+R). I had no idea there was any reason to lessen the mbs. The movies play fine. Lucky I guess. I'm learning tho'. Keep the info coming.

@garmoon

The better the media the less you have to worry about how close to the edge you burn. It's better to error on the safe side to prevent any problems so it has always been recommended to give a little cushion.

@ gear79

I love to sneak in here and there... :)
