hello...

everytime i go to copy a dvd with dvd shrink, it gives me a blue screen, almost without fail.

usually when there is between 24 and 20 minutes of image burning to go...

now, i have a celeron 2800, with 256 mg ram, 280 gb hdd, a samsung dvd rom and a pioneer dvd-rw dr108, i think...

i thought i solved this problem, but it looks like i haven't...

i dunno what else to provide, details-wise...

can anyone help me???

You need to upgrade your ram to a minimum of 512mb and 1 gig would be better.

Shrink is very CPU intensive and will zap everything you have trying to run and it is leaving you with nothing to run the system with.

Fortunately Ram is cheap.

In addition to the RAM issue, what brand blanks are you using, what program are you using to burn (DVD Shrink does not have a burn engine), at what speed are you burning?

it used to work just fine, though, a few months ago on the VERY same system...

the mediums...hmmm...it varies. i have a friend who works in a wholesale place, and he gives me all manner of 'samples'. anything from sony, verbatim and (the brand that sounds like a word, with a syllable missing), through to lesser known brands, ritek and some other japanese labels...it all depends.

i've tried ALL brands. it's not the burning itself that is the problem, it's the image creation, as it's not even getting to 60% of the image burnt...

it is burning on nero. full updated EVERYTHING. i checked again a few hours ago, nero is 100% fully upgraded...

it's almost as if something, unknown, has stopped me from being able to rip dvds now. i used to do it quite a bit, up until a few months ago, and i haven't done it in a while...

i can't even author dvds on nero with mpgs/avis anymore...something is wrong...

speed is set to 'max'. but i am using 8x discs, and i think that is the max speed of my burner...confusing.

Is your firmware up to date for your burner? It is not recommended to burn at more than 4X's. Have you degragged your HDD lately, you might want to. And as far as the media goes, it really is everything. Bad media can bring you to your knees. Is DMA enabled on your optical drive?

how can i tell if firmware is updated???

i'm not even getting to the 'burning' stage. dvdshrink doesn't get more than 60% of the image burnt. usually, when it gets to '22 minutes remaining', the thing conks out. just then, the computer restarted, all of its own choosing...

what is dma? how do i enable it???

i think the media thing would only be a problem if i couldn't read the disc (after being burnt) or if it wouldn't burn. the image isn't even being created, so i don't even know if the dvd-rs are the problem...

what gets me is that this wasn't a problem a few months ago when i was doing this a few times a week. now, i can't even burn a dvd AT all.

i defragged about 3 weeks ago...
