well you can set up an operating system ran from the memory card and processor that will boot drivers to access the drive as a mass storage USB (unwriteable) unit but why would you want to? your PS2 already has a CD/DVD read only drive built into it that doesn't require all the hassle and memory of running an external drive and it's 100x faster access.

if your looking for the ability to write to the drive just use a USB HDD or a mass storage USB unit.
