I have heard from friends that in the DVD process there is a danger of over heating ?
Resulting in serious problems if you do not have a decent heatsink on your processor ?Is this true .so Iam told in some case it can be terminal for your processor or mother board . Please bear with me as Iam a newbie but want to be fully aware of any problems like this ? Also can any body give me any idea how long the process takes with such as a AMD K62 500 for an average DVD disk ? I know all DVD discs are different in size .

There is no real problem with overheating unless the fans in your PC don't work anymore ;-) Ripping is just another proces that uses your CPU so it shouldn't give you any strange hardware trouble like overheating.

However I once encountered the problem that my DVD-drive stoped working because I copied CD's all day and the thing was red hot. But later on it was OK again.

I suggest that you try to keep some free space around your DVD writer, if you have one -- some DVD-R drives tend to get really hot after you've burned something like 10-20 CDs/DVDs within one day. And as we all know, electronics and heat don't mix very well.
