Hello. I was wondering if anyone could clarify as to how to play backed up copies of games that can be made by the various ripping guides on this board. I have a ps2 slim and don't plan on backing up right away but I want to have everything together once I do start and to make it the less painless. There are numerous ways to rip the games but I've scoured the internet for a bit and other than catching bits and pieces, I have yet to discover what using a gameshark entails. I am choosing to use the cd swapping method because of budget constraints and also for a lower technical difficulty.

Is this the gameshark I would be looking into buying to play backups on a ps2 slim? Here is the link:

I am aware of the cd swapping hassle but am willing to live with it. What about compatibility for current and older games? Is this more or less fool-proof? The biggest question is whether this will work on the newer ps2 slim as I haven't heard anything about this configuration with the fifth version of gameshark.

Thanks to anyone who can give me some insight on this inquiry. Have a Merry Christmas!

Swap magic is a LOT better than gameshark, plus, only old versions of gameshark work.

Can you blease elaborate as in why swap magic is significantly better than the current version of gameshark? Also, if possible, could you link to a reputable retailer of swap magic discs? I would really appreciate it.

Edit: Is this what I am looking for? PS2 slimline flip-top with magic swap discs)

Yeah, thats what you need (that price might be a little high though). Swap magic is better than gameshark for 2 reasons:
1. gamesharks requires multiple swaps to play dvd backups
2. Only the OLD version of gameshark will work (2.2 or under i think).

If you have a PS2 slimline, you need swap magic 3.6, and a slimkit- three plastic peices used to hold the sensors so that the ps2 doesn't sense the lid opening. Actually I only have two of the three plastic inserts installed on my ps2 (do not have the disk break stop installed) and it works great. Make sure you get the right slim kit there's one for slimline black and one for slimline white (pearl, silver, whatever.) Search the net for installation instructions, installation of slim kit is pretty simple.

Be warned, I have not had a successfull CD backup yet using SM 3.6, DVD's are no problem, but I haven't gotten to the bottom of my CD issues yet.

After that you'll need good disc-burning software i.e. Alchohol 120 or Nero (I use Nero 6) , burn your disc at a slow speed (usually no higher than 8x) and USE GOOD MEDIA- there's no excuse for using cheap Media- best readily available brands in US are Verbatim and TDK, PS2 does not read RW's.

Try to get backups that are the same region your in (NTSC if in US or Japan) Pal pretty much everywhere else you could possibly be reading this from.- There are Pal to NTSC converters (software) if you have no other options.

Understand and Follow these guidelines and your transition SHOULD be nearly seamless.
