unformating a PS2 Drive

Help please. I did a very silly thing and loaned my PS2 to my 9 year old nephew. A couple of hours later he calls and says that the drive is formating and wants to know if that is a bad thing. ARGGGGGGGGG!!! Anyone know of any way to unformat the drive??? Thanks in advance.
