I recently re-ordered by beloved Ritek dvds, when I was told that they didn't have anymore of the particular ones I wanted, but that they would replace my order with TYs, which were even better than Riteks.
I've just burned a whole bunch of stuff on these new TYs, and none of them work on my standalone Toshiba but will work in my desktop and my laptop. I've not changed my burning methods or anything. Most of the dvds I've burned are copies of ripped dvds already in my collection (all burned on riteks.) Has anyone else had this problem with TYs???
Should I go back to my supplier and ask them to replace these TYs with Riteks instead?

In addition to what Doc had mentioned, how fast did you burned them? How old is your standalone Toshiba dvd player? Keep in mind that if your standalone is 2 years or older, then you'll need to get the DVD+R and "book type" them as "DVD-ROM" so your Toshiba can play/read them. On the other hand, a lot of the newer/late media technologies are using newer media codes and speeds. With that said, make sure your burner firmware is up-to-date and it's best to "book type" them into DVD-ROM format when burning them -- DVD-ROM is the "universal" or it's one of the safest dvd format, it will play in all functional dvd players.

bought my TYs from a reputable Australian company and I have no reason to doubt that they're genuine. They're -Rs (as were the Riteks I have used for the last 3 yrs.) The TYs are 4x, and my burner is a Pioneer 105 which burns at 4x. The Riteks I used to use were also 4x.
My Toshiba is about 3 yrs old and has always worked fine paying -Rs until now.
hmmm...well, it sounds like a "possible bad batch" of TYs if you are CERTAIN they are GENUINE...the reason i keep on emphasizing the authenticity of Taiyo Yudens is because you mentioned you are down in Australia...from my Australian buddies that i keep in touch with from down under, AUTHENTIC TYs are supposedly quite DIFFICULT to find and are VERY expensive compared to "other" medias in Australia...this is just what they have told me, i live in the U.S. so i don't know how TRUE the statement is...
ok, from the sounds of it, do a quick "check" for me and i can tell you 100% if they are genuine or not...what you have are the 4x DVD-R Taiyo Yudens...just outside the hole, near the hub of the disc itself, will be a laser inscribed code...IF it is in fact a genuine 4x TY DVD-R disc, it will read something like this: GD000xxx (where xxx is a numerical value that signifies the batch number of when it was produced)...
might have to look carefully, but, ALL genuine/authentic Taiyo Yudens have a specific laser coding near the inner hub, if your 4x DVD-R, with media ID coding of TYG01 do not have this coding, then i'm sorry to say you got some FAKE TYs there~
i'm leaning more towards them being fake, i have yet to PERSONALLY encounter a standalone dvd player being able to PLAY Ritek DVD-R format media, while NOT BEING ABLE TO PLAY a Taiyo Yuden one...
i've had just the opposite hold true though, my wife's Toshiba (about less than a year old) will NOT play RitekG05s (8x Ritek dvd-r) sometimes, but it has NEVER had a problem with TYG01s (4x TY dvd-r), TYG02 (8x TY dvd-r), TYG03 (16x TY dvd-r) :)
rather than suggesting you go out and spend MORE money on a newer dvd player, please check for the inner hub coding i mentioned above on your 4x Taiyo Yudens...if you DO NOT see that coding, then THAT is your problem right there, return them to that australian company and demand for GENUINE taiyo yudens or simply get the Riteks that you HAVE HAD SUCCESS with in the past :) you either got FAKE TYs or a possible "bad batch" of REAL TYs...that would be MY guess based on the info you gave me...
