Valkyrie Profile - not finding memory cards

Hey, I'm trying this Valkyrie Profile backup I made a while ago when I sold the game on eBay for an outrageous amount of money.

The problem is that I can't get it to recognize any memory cards at all. I booted up the PS2 (it has a DMS3) holding Circle to boot a PS1 backup. I'm at a save point and it doesn't think I have any memory cards (I've tried both a ps1 and a ps2 card in each slot).

Any idea what the issue is?
