None of my burning programs will copy image files to cd-rw, what's up?

I have a Nec_DVD_RW ND2500A (DVD/CD-ROM Drive), I've been trying to copy some wav, wmv, avi, image files to a cd-rw. My Nero won't work, or the XP copying program won't work. I have Clone CD, WMplayer 9.0, etc and they will not copy these files to a cd-rw. Can't figure it out. I have no problem burning dvd's and ripping them. The nero program says it could not copy the files at 10x and aborts the burn. My burner is a 48x. could it be that it is trying to burn too fast and nero won't do it at that speed? Or do you format the cd before copying? What's UP? Need some advice.
