Can anyone tell me the difference between the dru500a and the dru500ax?

Nothing. The DRU500AX comes with the updated firmware. Which I believe ups the recording speeds (DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW) to x4.

If you have the DRU500A you can download the firmware. http://www.sonystorage.com
