I don't think talking about copying rentals is allowed here in AD.

I am not familiar with CloneDVD, but it is most likely a scratched or dirty disc. Clean it first. If it does not work, try spary car wax. The ones in the Aerosol work best, but McGuire's or Zymol and such should work as well.

You can also try it with DVD Decrypter. Here is a thread where I posted a PSL for the Widescreen Version:

Here is a guide I posted for ripping new ARccOS movies:

and here is a PSL guide by Cynthia:

It has a new type of protection. AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 latest version can handle it, as it is indicated on SlySoft website.

Here is my situation first of all. My son is a huge Spongebob fan. I already own all 3 seasons on DVD but he's only 4 so he doesn't have access to them. I am giving him an Xbox for Christmas so I want to burn the seasons to back-up DVD's so he doesn't damage the originals. I successfully burned seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 is giving me trouble. When I start DVD Decryptor, I first see a Region Code conflict. Don't remember the exact error. It automatically forces me to use Region 1 which is fine. About 30 minutes later it says successfully completed. I close Decryptor and open DVD Shrink 3.2 It analyzes fine and then I choose back up (I had to remove alt languages cause file was too large)It seems to encode fine after I press BACK-UP. It asks for the DVD media when ready to burn. It seems to burn fine. After the burn is done and tray ejects, I test it in my DVD player (Which plays burned DVD's) and it says DISC IS DIRTY. I have seen this before due to various protections, but have always overcome the errors through Decrytor software. I have made 3 coasters and have had no success yet. I already duped 40 Year Old Virgin earlier so I have a feeling this is related to that Region Code conflict at the beginning of the Decrytor ststus list. Anyone that can help would be very appreciated, especially if you have successfully burned this Season 3 yourselves. I am a N00B at Afterdawn so I apologize if there is an easy fix. I want to do these 3 dvd's as a Christmas present for him when he opens the XBOX. And yes I already have the XBOX DVD kit which plays burns. Also, will Clone DVD II and AnyDVD work to solve this. I know it didn't work on DVD Decrypter/Shrink. If so. My trial is almost up. Where can I find a full version free or how can i redownload once a trial expires.

@GENOCYDE,

Your problem sounds more like you are using low quality media. Get some better discs like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

Thank You,

I do normally use Ridata or Smart Buy. I can confirm that Clone DVD II and AnyDVD together did burn Season 3 part 1. I'd rather use DVD Decrytor and DVD Shrink. I don't think you should have to pay to protect your collection.

There is also a way you can keep on re-installing the trial, but it is a bit of a hassle. You would have to manually delete every AnyDVD entry in your registry and do it every 21 days. Or you can format and re-install windows every 21 days.

DVD Decrypter should not have a problem. The Region coding thing (RCE Protection) is just an extra layer of protection on Region 1 Discs. What this does is make the DVD not work on a Region 0 DVD Player. This is not the reason the the DVD failed.

It could have been that the original was dirty or something, but usually after the rip it has to do with the discs you use to burn the movie.

I didn't know you could delete trial versions. How do I do this. Email me the info if you like. I've been trying to do this with Acoustica 2.46 label maker. All 3 of my trials are up this Friday!!! Thank you for all your help. Can't believe I waited so long to join Afterdawn

Here is the link to the post where it was written:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=1186988&postcount=48

The instructions are not the most in depth, but it is simple enough.

I would stick with DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink for backups though. Then if you do not feel like making a PSL or following the guide I posted in the other Thread, you can get free alternatives to AnyDVD like DVD43, which is basically the same thing, but free (just not updated as often), or DVDFab Decrypter.

Oh, and remember to keep your burn speed lower than max, expecoally on cheaper media. I burn at 4x even on Premium Taiyo Yuden DVDs. If you have a newer DVD Player, you can get away with 8x on TYs though, but not cheaper discs.

I would strongly advise against making labels for your DVDs though, unless if you just make the box labels. Putting a label on the Disc can cause all sorts of problems like weight imbalance, improper spin speed, and more. This could result in damaging your DVD player!!!

Also, AnyDVD will only have an advantage in discs with ARccOS corruption. DVD Decrypter handles Ripguard, but needs a bit of help for newer ARccOS titles (either a PSL file or the guide I posted).

Buck up and buy the AnyDVD. You'll be glad you did. Playing around in the Registry if you're not familiar with what you're doing is a good way to mess up things in your operating system.

The History on AnyDVD on the download page makes some interesting reading if you just skim through it. You can see the encryptions that AnyDVD has been upgraded to cover. In R1 (North America) there was recently an upgrade for "Macrovision Ripguard" on "Madagascar". The same encryption was used on other movies in different regions. Just before that there was the "Chapter Jump" protection. Then of course we have those unreadable sectors and other things the industry does to alter the DVD structure to fool recording systems. And that's just some of the recent things.

Since this thread started out with Stealth, the only region I'm aware that had a problem with it was R2 (Greece) where they used a new version of Sony Arccos. I did the R1 (North America) just recently and it had no problems. The disc condition is suspect with that problem. Some discs that will play won't record.

They changed the rules here at AD, so unless things changed we're allowed to speak of recording rentals. This is a world forum not limited to on locale and laws vary. Just remember the laws in your own region. That brings me to the condition of rentals, usually poor. If a person sees a lot of them, a resurfacing tool like Skip Dr can be used to polish scratchs from the disc surface. I've saved scratched up discs I've bought at yard sales this way. The laminate surface of a DVD needs to be clean and shiny. Usually all that's needed is a soft cloth and a touch of water to clean and polish a disc. I've heard of people using yellow magic markers to help with scratches and various other remedies. The disc tool or buffing is all I've ever needed. If the damage is into the dye layer, then there's no hope.

I use AnyDVD for Decryption and DVD Decrypter to rip the files to the HDD. That method insures a good ripped file which is the key to any good transcoding (backup). With DVD Decrypter having lost support the decryption software is becoming obsolete. PSL files have been used for some time and were used as temp measures while the author upgraded the app. Now it's the only way with newer encryption variations due to no further updates. I find it easier to simply let SlySoft keep up with updates than to create PSL files or search for those already set up by others. And AnyDVD has benefits for all the encryptions systems, not just Arccos. Try looking in it's history log and you'll see. I've been using AnyDVD along with Decrypter even before support of Decrypter was dropped. I find the two play well together. With the large library I have, I've done a lot of DVD backups with the two.

As for GENOCYDE, many people use freeware. DVD Shrink is an excellent piece of software. If using the quality settings, it does take a bit of time. Unless CloneDVD2 did something different to update their transcoding engine, Shrink has the advantage at high compression. Shrink decryption software is out of date, no further support for it either. You can use the burner portion of DVD Decrypter to burn ISO, so a free burner is available. As I said, the only thing you really need is a good decryption tool. Until recently DVD Decrypter filled most needs. It was updated almost as fast as the AnyDVD, almost. Now I suggest AnyDVD and that to be used along with DVD Decrypter for ripping to the HDD. I've found no good replacement for DVD Decrypter as the premiere free tool as a standalone for decryption .

You're welcome. Normally, if you can get a clean rip to the HDD, you've solved most of your backup problems. With AnyDVD and Decrypter I've actually gone out and purchased DVDs with known problems to see if I would suffer the same problems as others. Usually by the time I got the DVD, the AnyDVD software had already been updated.

As I pointed out earlier, I stopped depending on DVD Decrypter for decryption before it lost support. I went to the combo of AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter to create the clean hard drive files for transcoding. To date I've been able to backup all of my movies. My video library consists of a few hundred movies, both classic and new releases. So, I've encountered just about every encryption system other than the Macrovision Ripguard and that one is covered by the software. I'll see it shortly as the kids will be wanting "Madagascar" sooner or later. Right now they're concentrating on Christmas. With that thought, I'll wish everyone a happy holiday season. Have a good one... Merry Christmas.

@Brobear,

I can confirm that Madagascar ripped fine for me a couple weeks ago using those 2 pieces of software. i have been in contact with AnyDVD and they offered me the bundle deal with Clone 2 and Clone CD but said I have to pay for a new license after the year of Elaborate Bytes is up. AnyDVD is forever. However long that is. Again Thank You and I appreciate all your knowledge. I am done encoding and ripping Spongebob Season 3 ;) Next will be Into The Blue and American Pie IV
Any recommendations on media. Only place to buy TY's is online. LG has some Dynex, there's FUJI etc. I know Mem's a crap. I'm buying a new Lightscribe right after Christmas. Itz a I/O Magic 16X

You're welcome.

For off the shelf, Sony is a good choice. Their Made in Japan is often a TY manufactured product. The Taiwanese generic does well. I was just to SAM's recently and they had a bundled package of 50 Japanese and 25 Taiwanese, separate spindles in a wrapped pack. Came to about 40 cents per disc. Not too bad. You can feel safe with most of the name brands with Made in Japan on the label. The Verbatim is good, just beware of the low end procduct. They have a CMC offering. Go for the made in Japan when possible. CMC, the manufacturer that tanked Memorex, appears to be coming along. They are being sold under a large number of brands without destroying their names, including Verbatim. That's why it pays to check each media purchase, irregardless of brand, to see what you're using.

Since you're doing a planned purchase of a drive, I'd suggest at least taking a look at the Plextor. As an extra feature, I've heard that booktyping to DVD ROM helps the playability of recorded +R DL media. Not all drives do it, but Plextors support booktyping (bitsetting). I would have gotten one, but I had to do an emergency replacement and one wasn't available locally.
