Has anyone every used Universal DVD-R Branded media? Supposedly, it's as good as Pioneer Brand. It's going for 5.50 ea, single sided, dvd-5.
Also, which generic brands are reliable for set-top dvd players? I hear alot about Princo, Meritime, and ProDVD. Any info would greatly be appreciated.

Haven't had any problems burning to them.

Thanks for the link. What's the failure rate on the media there and how compatible are they with set-top dvd players? Also, are you using the silver or gold?

As you can see, my main concern is compatibility with set-top dvd players. I'm looking for a brand of media that has maximum compatibily/reliability.

I have been using the silver..... burned 25 so far without any failures. I just put in for another order of them. I use mine in a Sony with no problem....

I have been using Memorex DVD-R, which have a purple coating on the write side. I haven't had any wasted media, but it doesn't play on my Apex600a. However, it does play on my Samsung player.
I just ordered some Universal Branded media and will give the compatibility results to the group. They are said to be the "most compatible" to Pioneer brand and ARE usable for PS2, when compared to all other low cost branded media.

Correction to last message...
What I meant to say was that they're the "most compatible" with set-top players and that they are very comparible to Pioneer media.

I have also ordred these Universal DVD they ARE like Pioneer DVD-R ... quality is good... Princo, Meriline, DVDPro alway give me problem... especially princo... I use these Univerasl dvd to back up my PS2 games... works perfectly no skipping no loading... anyone else tried them before? Highly recommanded.. =)

Try Http://www.supermediastore.com. I have only used my DVD-Rs for data backup up until now without any problems.I doubt that there would be a problem with video.
DVD-Rs: $1.19 with cases, quantity 90+

they sell B grade media... best way to tell is to look at inner clear plastic part... if there is gel leak it's B grade... another way is to look at outer circle if there is bubble like tiny holes around the outer circle of the disc it's B grade...

I was just wondering why TDK media(no-print) is so cheap, but the ACTUALL labeled TDK is 3X more expensive.
So I researched around and even ask TDK, and of course TDK said they had nothing to do with this no-print media, also they simply states that they have no distributor releasing no-print TDK 2X media.
There is rumar about it being distributed from a small manufacture which is suppose to OEM for TDK, however after mass production the media didn't pass the Quality Controll of TDK, therefore it was fowarded to all the off brand media distributor, and claim to be "TDK media"
anyone else have other information on this media?

I just received my order from Allmediaoutlet and am pleased with there generic DVD-r which is priced at 84 cents each or 1 each with DVD Cases. The Disc shows none of the B grade indicators(bleeding in middle of spindle or bubbles on outer edge) and I had no problems writing to the disc with my DVR A04. This is there generic brand but the invoice stated that it is from LEAD DATA..

I just purchase some of the TDK media that was sold on www.supermediastore.com. I have Pioneer A03 At first i wasn't able to burn at 2x. I contacted one of the sale rep there and they told me that I just have to update my firmware again.
The rep told me that their store has recently been bought over by another company. I ask them about the Unbranded TDK Issue they told me that the TDK media was actually sold by a Chinese company where as the company manufacture OEM TDK media for TDK.
Now i am able to burn at 2X and has recieved a coupon code for my new order. If anyone looking to save money on the grade A TDK media here is a hint. Use these COUPON code they gave me. I think is TDK0829 with that i think you could save like $40 bucks when you buy like 100 TDK media.

ya Pioneer has just released a new firmware update... forgot the link though. it is like a update for future 4X media... just as I said... some company that OEM the media... for TDK... but TDK refuse to claim any relationship with them... because it's illegal do claim TDK brand without TDK's approval.

It's really interesting!
I've bought 100 pack Ritek DVD-R from

It burned at 2X (Save me half tim!) on firmware 1.31, but only at 1X after upgraded to firmwire 1.32.
Even burn at 1X, the price is good enough $1.05 each for a reliable DVD-R Media.

FYI.. I tried using the universal media provided on vobheads link above, and none of my players (PS2, Sony stand alone, AO4 DVD-RW, and Pioneer DVD rom) will recognize the disc. I have gone back to using Memorex media, and have had no problems. Oh one more thing, all the DVD's I burned were under 120min. Hope this info helps. Oh and my PS2 is one of the first ones to come out. (i think revision 5, i just know that I got it opening day so its probably from the older batch)

Really? it worked better then memorex for me, I use Pioneer DVR-104 and have (ver7) PS2.
I think older PS2 just don't read DVD-R well..

Actually i finaly watched one of my copies all the way through, and the memorex media craps out on me about 80-90 mins through. I think the media gets to hot, because if you pull it out and let it cool for a minute, it will work fine were it was skipping before. I found these double sided discs though that work awesome, so i have been using those. They are 10 bucks a piece but they work fantastic. Here is the link to the site http://www.firewire-1394.com. They have pioneer double sided and another brand thats 44.95 for 5, and those are what I have been usin. Actually now that I have reread the post on the universal media, I purchased the Universal Media- no print. I wonder if the regular universal ones would work? Oh FYI my PS2 is my DVD player. I have a stand alone downstairs, but I mainly use my PS2. So any reviews on media and what worked and didnt, always assume I used a PS2 to test it.

I have a question. I just recently bought a new Dell 4500 series with a DVD burner. Now a program came with the computer giving me the ability to burn captured video from a video camera to a DVD. My question is if I want to burn a DVD movie that a rented from a rental store to a 4 hr DVD-RW...how would I go about doing that. I have tried this but twice now and I keep getting that this is the wrong format for that program.
Do I need a certain program to do this?
Is there a program to do this?
Where Can I get this program?
If you have any idea, please reply back ASAP

Skull - there is a FAQ on this website that will explain to you how to do this. I dont have the link straight to the FAQ, but it is a newbies FAQ to burning DVD-R and it will answer all of your questions...to give you a simple answer though, you will need to download DVD decrypter, and if the source disk (movie you rented) is less than 4.7 gb it is a very easy process, if it is bigger, you will need to do some splitting and editing.
