I recently bought norton's internet security 2006, started to install the antivirus DVD, got "fatal error" and everything stopped.

I have tried reinstalling - no joy. When I try to use any program I get a message saying that Windows doesn't know which program to use and that I need to create a link through the control panel (I have a vague idea of what this means, having experienced it with some new programmes). I get the same message when I try and run "Settings" to get to control panel.

What do I do?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply, it is helpful.

However, I cannot access the internet (to allow Norton to scan my machine) because I cannot launch any programmes, such as explorer (or the reasons already mentioned).

No. Just Windows XP. I had uninstalled EZ Armor a few weeks previously, because I was having problems downloading a paid for copy. That uninstallation appeared to have been completely successful.

Ok m8 could be a windows problem ,

what version are you running ?

does this happen everytime you try to install other programs ??

run sfc/ scannow in cmd prompt . Only do this if you have your windows cd , it will search for and repair any issues windows may have

try this a see what happens ,
