I have a Sony 36" flat screen, a Magnavox vcr/dvd, a Sherwood 6500 A/V receiver, and a 5.1 MTS home theater system. I'm usually pretty good hooking up stuff like this, but I am totally stumped. I can't get anything out of my speaker system except am/fm radio? I have no book on the speakers, I need to start from scratch, step by step, from the TV down or from the receiver up? I can't seem to find the right combination of inputs and outputs? need help!

Hi mikejen! Most Sony TVs will have an audio menu; you need to turn the speakers to "OFF" in order to send the signal out to the AVR. Have you done that?

Ideally your A/V receiver will output 5.1 channels amplified. In this case, you just attach speakers w/ speaker wire. Start with Front L & R.
But some HTS have 5.1 decoder built in, and output to speakers via proprietary cabling (ie. not speaker wire).
Is your Sony TV your source of MTS audio? Or do you get MTS from your HTS system? Are your speakers amplified (ie. self-powered) or do they hookup with speaker wire?
Typically, you turn a stereo into Home Theatre by hooking up a centre channel. The Sony TV speakers could be used. Introduce L & R surround, and there are your 5 channels :^)
But you need to first determine whether your speakers are self-powered or traditional, and what your source for MTS will be.
