Were your previous Maxell disks the +R variety also? I don't know anything about the Sony burners but you may be able to booktype those burns. You may also need to update the Sony's firmware. Just out of curiosity are those Sony disks made in Japan?

On your SONY burner, (I have two) and if your using Nero Recode2 use the slow burn option which is not very slow at all it really serves to enhance the quality of your movie. Stay away from "Burn on a fly" it helps to create errors also do not use burn analysis if not needed i.e (a new in good condition DVD movie). I use the SONY 8X speed either MIT or MIJ it doesn't matter there both made by TY if your interested. I burn my movies at the blank disc speed which for me is 8x with no errors in 98% of copies I've made with SONY. Hey bad disc can be found in any spindle.

@paradyme

Are you sure Taiyo Yuden has a manufacturing plant in Taiwan? I thought it was a Japanese company.

No not really. It may just be an issue with your player and the new disks. I would still update your burners firmware if needed and booktype your burns if that burner will do it. If your player is a few years old it may just have trouble with the newer disks. That is why people booktype around here because it increases compatibility.

@Tim05, Nope, as it relates to SONY media. Yeah, Taiwan may have issues with other brands of blank DVD 8x media. SONY's are all made by the same manufacture just different locations. I have no quality isues with either JAPAN made or Taiwan made media. "Don't believe the hype". Try them out yourself.:)
